Begic's Third Straight Award Highlights Volleyball Weekly Honors

NEW ORLEANS- The Sun Belt Conference announced the weekly volleyball award winners as Edina Begic, Markie Schaedig, Megan Mathis, and Qiana Canete.

Edina Begic of UALR won her third consecutive Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week award.  The senior had another fantastic week by totaling 49 kills over two matches. Begic recorded a season-high 27 kills along with 11 digs to earn her 51st career double-double and sixth of the season against UTA. She also hit a fantastic .409 on 49 attempts. Begic carried over her great performance into Sunday’s contest with Georgia Southern by racking up 22 more kills and coming up a dig short of another double-double. Begic ended the week with 6.12 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .321.

Sophomore Megan Mathis was named Sun Belt Setter of the Week as she continued her great season with great performances against UT Arlington and Georgia Southern. Mathis set a career-high by dishing out 53 assists against UTA, an average of 13.25 per set. She followed up her season-best performance with another great outing against Georgia State in which she recorded 44 assists at 11.00 per set. Mathis totaled 97 assists over the two-game week and averaged 12.13 assists per set as UALR went 2-0 on the week with 3-1 wins over Georgia Southern and UT Arlington.

Sophomore libero Markie Schaedig was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year.  Schaedig is second in the nation in digs per set and continued her fine form with 43 digs (6.14 digs per set) during A-State’s 2-0 weekend at home.  She tallied 16 digs (5.33 digs per set) in three sets of action against UL Monroe Friday night before recording 27 digs (6.75 digs per set) against UT Arlington.

Qiana Canete was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this year as she helped spur the Mavericks over the past week, leading the team in kills with 30 and digs with 42. The Outside Hitter came to play in UTA’s four-set loss to UALR as she recorded 17 kills and 18 digs with a hitting percentage of .277. In Sunday’s matchup with Arkansas State, the Copperas Cove, Texas native led the team in kills and digs with 13 kills and 24 digs also claiming her 11th double-double this season. Over the week Canete averaged team-highs in kills per set with 3.75 and digs per set with 5.25 while also serving up one ace, one block and three assists in the pair of games.
