MOBILE, Ala. - Fourth-seeded Texas State scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and added the walk-off on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth as the Bobcats rallied late to defeat No. 5 WKU 4-3 in game one of the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala.
WKU (29-27) led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth when the Toppers made the call to the pen to Ian Thompkins to close things out. Thompkins faced two batters, walking both, before being relieved for Sam Higgs who gave up two hits and allowed the Bobcats (29-26) to tie things up in the ninth.
Thompkins hit Texas State's Granger Studdard and then walked Austin O'Neal before being replaced by Higgs. Cody Lovejoy advanced Studdard to third and reached first on a fielder's choice before Tyler Pearson singled through the left side scoring Studdard and cutting WKU's lead to 3-1.
David Paiz also singled through the left side loading the bases for the Bobcats with one out in the ninth. WKU then made a pitching change, bringing in Brennan Pearson to replace Higgs. Pearson's first batter he faced, Tanner Hill, was walked bringing in Lovejoy, cutting the lead to 3-2 with only one out.
Texas State's Cory Geisler brought a little drama to the game as his fly ball to right was caught by Regan Flaherty giving the Toppers a second out but Pearson tagged up at third forcing a Flaherty throw to catcher, Ryan Messex. Flaherty's throw beat Pearson but Messex was unable to hold onto the ball as Pearson would score, knotting it all up at three, apiece.
In the bottom of the tenth, Texas State's Studdard was walked following a Garrett Mattledge flyout. O'Neal then singled up the middle putting Studdard on third who then scored on Lovejoy's sacrifice fly to right field, completing the comeback for Texas State.
With the win Texas State will now face the winner of the UL Lafayette/UL Monroe game on Thursday, May 22 at 4:00 PM. WKU will face the loser of that game on Thursday at 9:00 AM.
