MOBILE, Alabama – Matt Shortall's two-run double in the eighth inning lifted No. 2 UT Arlington to the Sun Belt Championship title game with Saturday afternoon's 8-7 semifinal victory over Arkansas State at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala.
Awaiting the No. 2 Mavericks (33-25) is top-seeded UL Lafayette (52-7) in the 1 p.m. championship tilt with an automatic berth in the NCAA Baseball Tournament on the line. The game will be televised live by the Sun Belt Network and on ESPN3.
UT Arlington is gunning for its third different conference championship in the last three years. The Mavericks won the Southland Tournament title in 2012 and were WAC regular-season champions the following year.
UT Arlington's current 10-game winning streak is the longest since a 10-game unbeaten run in 1990.
The Mavericks were down 7-6 with two outs and none on in the eighth before starting the game-winning rally. Darien McLemore and Ryan Bottger both worked walks against ASU reliever Morgan Croft, bringing up Shortall. The senior, 0-4 with two pop-ups heading into his final at-bat, took the pitch into the gap right-center to score both runners and give the Mavericks the lead.
UTA reliever Chad Nack came nailed down the win with a perfect ninth for his fourth save. TJ Whidby earned the win for UTA, his first of the season. Brad Vachon got the start for the Mavericks and went four and two-thirds allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four.
Croft earned the loss for the Red Wolves whose season comes to an end at 32-27. Tanner Gaines got the starting nod for the Red Wolves but only lasted an inning and a third as he allowed four runs on three hits.
