NEW ORLEANS – Nine different Sun Belt Conference institutions have claimed top Team GPA Awards for the 2014-15 academic year, announced today by the league office.
The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the Sun Belt. For award purposes, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field are counted as a single sport.
South Alabama led all schools with four of its teams – Men’s Track & Field, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Track & Field and Women’s Cross Country – earning top GPAs in its respective sports. Arkansas State, Georgia State, Little Rock and Troy each had two squads each with the highest GPA. Georgia Southern, Hartwick (affiliated men’s soccer member), UL Lafayette and UL Monroe each had one team with the highest GPA on the list.
All told, 98 programs on the list registered a GPA of at least 3.0; with the overall highest team GPA coming from South Alabama’s Women’s Cross Country team who posted a 3.67 GPA for the 2014-15 academic year. Georgia Southern’s Women’s Tennis team posted a 3.66 GPA while UL Monroe’s Volleyball team registered a 3.65 GPA. Sixty-three percent of all Sun Belt programs recorded a team GPA over 3.0 during the academic year.
Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Soccer and Volleyball laid claim to the highest number of teams posting a 3.0 or greater with ten teams each. In addition, three sports saw all of its teams post 3.0 or greater team GPAs during the academic year as Women’s Soccer, Women’s Golf and Softball all posted GPAs 3.0 or greater.
