NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships are set to take place this Saturday morning on the Troy University Dothan Campus in Dothan, Ala. The women’s race begins at 10 a.m. CT with the men’s race set for 11 a.m.

The women’s race will feature a 5K course while the men will run an 8K course around the campus.

On the women’s side, defending champions South Alabama under the direction of head coach David Barnett, will look to repeat as Sun Belt champions for the second time in school history and the first time since 1992-93. South Alabama claimed the win at last year’s meet by a 20-point margin after finishing with 46 total points on the 5K course at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Atlanta, Ga.

The Jaguars were narrowly picked to win the title for this year’s race as they finished first in the preseason poll, just three points ahead of second-place Coastal Carolina and six points ahead of third-place Appalachian State.

The UT Arlington Mavericks were a unanimous selection to take home the men’s title in the preseason poll. UTA is the returning champion on the men’s side after finishing with 52 points last year, 14 points ahead of second-place finisher Appalachian State. The Mavericks, also 2013 Sun Belt champions, will be looking to be the first team to repeat since Little Rock did in 2001-02.

Saturday’s meets will be the first-ever championship competition in the Sun Belt Conference for its newest member, Coastal Carolina University.
