FOLEY, Ala. - After a scoreless first half, second-seeded Coastal Carolina tallied three goals in the second half as the Chanticleers defeated seventh-seeded Arkansas State, 3-0, at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Wednesday's first mach of the 2016 Women's Soccer Championship.
The teams played to a draw in the first half with both teams getting two shots each.
The Chanticleers offensive attack then came alive shortly after kick-off in the second half as defender Ellie Taylor would score her first goal of the season in the 53rd-minute. Taylor headed in a cross from forward Amber Adams who advanced in the box from the left side.
Just ten minutes later, the Chanticleers continued their offensive momentum to take a 2-0 lead over the Red Wolves. In the 62nd minute, Daniella Famili received a driven ball from Adams on the flank in the center of the 18-yard box. Famili cut by her defender and placed the ball in the back of the net. The goal was Famili’s ninth goal of the season, tying her season-best from 2015.
In the 76th minute, Brooke Horist battled through the midfield to go 1-v-1 with her defender. Horist drilled one into the bottom left corner to put Coastal in a comfortable 3-0 lead, which proved to be the final score.
The Chants outshot the Red Wolves, 15-6, in the game and 13-4, in the second half.
CCU keeper, Becca Austin (9-4-3), recorded her sixth solo shutout of the season and gave the Chanticleers their 11th shutout of the season – which tied the 2013 team for most in a season.
The win improves the Chants to 11-5-3 overall while dropping A-State to 6-8-3. CCU will face the winner of Wednesday's second match between No. 3 Little Rock and No. 6 UL Monroe on Friday at 4 p.m. (CT).
