FOLEY, Ala. - Playing as the fourth seed for the second consecutive season, the Appalachian State Mountaineers advanced to the Women's Soccer Championship semifinals after posting a 3-0 win over fifth-seeded UL Lafayette on Wednesday.
The Mountaineers scored all three goals in the second half, starting with Jackie Nieradka's 58th-minute shot from 20 yards out. Jane Cline, the 2016 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year added her third assist of the season as the Mountaineers jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
App scored once again to take a 2-0 lead in the 66th-minute as Erin Settle scored on a goal assisted by Nieradka. Settle took the pass from Nieradka and split the defense.
Maggie Hanusek picked up her second goal of the season and final goal of the night for the Mountaineers after breaking free from the left side to push the ball past the Ragin' Cajun keeper, Cosette Morche.
APP outshot the Cajuns 14-9, with 10 of those 14 coming in the first half. Of their four shots in the second half, three found the back of the net for the Mountaineers.
With the win the Mountaineers improved to 10-7-2 on the season while the Cajuns fall to 8-9-2.
The Mountaineers advance to Friday's second semifinal and will face the winner of Wednesday's final match between South Alabama and Troy.
