BIRMINGHAM - The Texas State Bobcats claimed the men's team title at the 2016 Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex with a team total of 127.5 points. It is the first indoor team title for Jody Stewart's squad from San Marcos, Texas.
Appalachian State claimed the women's team title with 101.5 points. It was the first indoor team title for the Mountaineers since joining the league.
UT Arlington finished second in the men's team standings with 113.5 points and Arkansas State was third with 102.5.
The Bobcats were second on the women's side, two points behind the Mountaineers, with 99.5 points. The Red Wolves also finished third in the women's team standings with 96 points.
Little Rock's Noora Wallenius was named the Women's Top Meet Scorer with a total of 26 points. Christoph Graf from South Alabama was named the Men's Top Meet Scorer with a total of 20 points.
Wallenius was victorious in the women's mile and was the runner-up in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meters. Graf won both the men's 3,000-meters and the mile.
The final event of the championship – the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay was both won by the Bobcats. The women’s foursome, comprised of Tramesha Hardy, Sydni Willis, Amber Gilmore and Esther Oyetunde, set a new Sun Belt championship record with a time of 3:43.51. The men’s relay, comprised of Demarcus Porter, Anthony Johnson, DeQuad Binder and Dexter Lee, finished in 3:12.04, a mere few hundredths off of the championship record.
Down six points to the Red Wolves in the women's team standings, the Mountaineers gained 11 points in the final field event of the evening, the women's triple jump, by taking third- and fourth-place in the horizontal jump. The Red Wolves did not have anyone competing which allowed the Mountaineers to move in front and take the crown.
USA's Kaitlyn Beans won the women's triple jump title with a leap of 42'3.25". Mylana Hearn was second and Kaytlyn Gill of App State was third.
UTA took home the top three places in the men's 5,000-meters as Craig Lautenslager, Eric Ojeda and Michael Guerrero went one-two-three, respectively, in the event. The trio was five seconds ahead of the next fastest time.
UTA's Roland Sales defended his high jump title, this year winning the event by a full foot ahead of freshman Tiaan Steenkamp from A-State. Sales cleared 7'2.25" to win the title for the second consecutive year.
A-State's David Phillips was third.
USA's Jordan Friz won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 13'3.75", her first indoor pole vault title. Last year's champion, Alexandra Pevtsova of A-State was second and USA's Kayla Carlile was third.
Georgia State's LaPorscha Wells earned her second individual title on Tuesday, this time winning the women's shot put competition. She set a new Sun Belt championship record with a toss of 54'3.75". Texas State's Talore Kelly was second and Erin Farmer of A-State was third. Wells becomes the second consecutive double winner in the throws for the women as Kelly accomplished the feat last year.
App State's Tristan Van Ord claimed her second individual indoor title in as many days as she won the women's 5,000-meters on Tuesday, a day after winning the 3,000-meter title. Van Ord's time of 16:47.37 was eight seconds faster than runner-up Noora Wallenius of Little Rock. Joanna McCoy of USA was third. The 5,000-meter results for the top three were the same as they were for the 3,000-meters.
The Ragin' Cajuns' Tristan Whitehall won the men's shot put competition with a toss of 57'5.5". Nathan Milch of App State was second and Texas State's Roman Rodriguez took third. The Bobcats scored 14 points in the event placing third, fourth and sixth, respectively.
UL Lafayette's Hanoj Carter took home the men's title in the 200-meters with a time of 21.10 seconds. The time was a new personal best indoors for Carter and moved him into the top 20 in the NCAA this season. USA's Rafael Scott was second followed by Jaylen Bacon of A-State.
Bobcat freshman, Tramesha Hardy, claimed her first women's 200-meter title, besting Kristina Knott of A-State and Ravin Gilbert of GSU in the process. Hardy posted a time of 23.61 in her win.
A-State's Roelf Pienaar won his second-consecutive indoor triple jump title claiming first-place honors with a leap of 51'7.25". Lebrun Nelson of ULM was second and Tobi Fawehinmi of UTA was third.
Ryan Hastings of App State won the men's 800-meters followed by a trio of Texas State runners in Tyrone Jackson (2nd), DeQuad Binder (3rd) and Kyle Denomme (4th). Hastings' winning time was 1:52.01.
GSU's Nuria Ramirez took home the title in the women's 800-meters out-kicking Anamarija Petters of UTA at the finish line. Ramirez ran 2:12.83, just a few seconds off of the Sun Belt record for the event. Petters finished in 2:12.85 in one of the closer races of the afternoon on Tuesday.
A-State's Jamil Peeples earned the title in the men's 60-meter hurdles as he crossed the line with a new Sun Belt record time of 7.99 seconds. Stanley Broaden of Appalachian State was second and Tyler Hughes was third.
Antonisha Stewart of Texas State successfully defended her 60-meter hurdle title as she raced to the win in 8.38 seconds. Samone Thompson of A-State was second and Kaylee Krenek, Stewart's teammate, was third.
USA's Scott entered the men's 60-meter dash final with the fastest qualifier from day one. He emerged as the champion in the finals as he crossed the line with a time of 6.67 seconds, besting both Jeryl Brazil of UL Lafayette and Jaylen Bacon of A-State in the process. Brazil and Bacon finished with identical times of 6.70 seconds.
Georgia State's Gilbert raced out to a title in the women's 60-meters, fending off A-State's Kristina Knott at the finish. Gilbert's time of 7.36 was a new Sun Belt season best for her. Knott finished in 7.42 and Darlene Girardeau of Appalachian State was third in 7.50.
Demarcus Porter of Texas State won the men's 400-meters with a time of 47.07. Porter's teammate, Anthony Johnson was second and ULM's Andrew Tate was third. Texas State earned 27 points in the event as Dexter Lee and Lincoln Warren placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in addition to Porter and Johnson.
ULM's Isaac Grieder claimed his second indoor heptathlon title, winning the 2016 version with a total of 5,273 points. Grieder won the indoor title in 2014 and was runner-up in 2015. He picked up 865 points in the pole vault, clearing 15'11". He also posted 854 points in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.08. Grieder's other 850-plus point total came in the hurdles with a total of 858 points with a time of 8.51.
Grieder's 5,273 points were 21 better than UL Lafayette's Franz Beyer who finished in second. Beyer was the leader through day one of the heptathlon.
A-State's Keturah Smith picked up the win in the women's 400-meters with a time of 55.06. Niata Alexander of Troy was second and Taylor Davis of UT Arlington was third.
Little Rock freshman, Noora Wallenius, won the first event final on Tuesday, winning the women's mile with a time of 4:56.12. She was second in the women's 3,000-meters on Monday. UT Arlington's Katelyn Hayward made a push at the end but was unable to overcome Wallenius' kick and finished second. USA's Laura Labusschaigne was third.
