USA CLOSES HOME TOURNAMENT WITH RUN-RULE WIN OVER SOUTHERN MISS

MOBILE, Ala. – No. 23 University of South Alabama softball bounced back from a pair of Saturday losses with a 10-2, mercy-rule victory over Southern Miss on Sunday.

USA (6-3) outhit the Golden Eagles, 12-6, on the day, powered by Emily Messer's 5-for-5 performance, and rode a quality performance from junior right-hander Destin Vicknair.

Sunday's win followed a string of three Jaguar losses at its own 2016 Mardi Gras Invitational to Mississippi State, Samford and SIU-Edwardsville. Mississippi State finished the weekend 4-0, while Samford and Southern Miss were 2-2 and SIU-Edwardsville was 1-3.

South Alabama travels to Baton Rouge on Wednesday to face LSU at 6 p.m. Links to live stats can be found on the Jaguar softball schedule page. In-game Twitter updates are provided for each South Alabama game @USAJagsSoftball.

Messer's five hits set a new single-game school record. Additionally, the senior scored two runs and drove in a pair. Paige Holmes was 2-for-2 with a career-high three RBI and a run scored. Haleigh Lane was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Vicknair improved to 3-0 with the win, striking out six to two walks and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits.

Southern Miss (6-5) struck first on Jillian Johnson's bases-loaded walk in the first inning, but the Jaguars answered with a three-spot in the bottom half of the opening frame to take a 3-1 lead.

Alex Breeden drew a walk after the Jags loaded the bases, and Stephanie Pilkington grounded out to score Kaleigh Todd. Holmes supplied her first RBI with a single up the middle to plate Kristian Foster, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Golden Eagles cut the host lead to one in the top of the second when Katie Cleary grounded out to first, and Samantha Reynolds scored from third.

South Alabama took control over the final three innings, scoring seven unanswered, beginning with Todd's RBI groundout, which scored Messer, in the bottom of the fourth.

An inning later, Holmes lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Pilkington, and Haleigh Lane scored on a Southern Miss fielding error to put the Jaguars ahead, 6-2.

A four-run sixth inning enacted the mercy rule. With the bases loaded, Holmes scored Breeden with a base hit, and Lane scored her second run on Megan Harris's bases-loaded walk. Messer's single to right center scored Dayla Gulledge, who made her debut on Sunday, and Holmes to run the score to 10-2 and end play.

Johnson took the loss for Southern Miss, falling to an even 2-2 on the year after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Meredith Miller gave up four runs (all earned) on as many hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief, while Danielle Block threw one-third of an inning and allowed one hit with a walk.

Drake Homers Twice as Panthers Beat Bears 8-2

ATLANTA – Georgia State's softball team used three home runs to take down in-state rival Mercer 8-2 Sunday evening in the final game of the Panther Invitational at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.

The Panthers (4-6) jumped to a 1-0 lead thanks to an Ivie Drake leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. GSU added another run in the inning as Mandy Blackwell scored from second off a two-out Kensey Caldwell RBI-single. GSU made it 5-0 with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a Caldwell two-run bomb, her second home run of the season.

Mercer (3-6) made things interesting in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs to make it a 5-2 ballgame, but Georgia State pulled away in the bottom half of the inning with a bases-loaded infield single and Blackwell's second RBI of the game, a sac fly with the bases loaded.

With her team up 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Drake added an insurance run with another solo home run, her second of the game and third of the season. Drake finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI, four runs and two walks. Blackwell was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Caldwell finished 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.

Cajuns Cruise By UCA in Classics Finale

LAFAYETTE – The No. 7-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team reached four home runs for the third time this season as part of a 14-hit attack that carried the squad past Central Arkansas 11-1 (5 inn.) in the 30th Annual Louisiana Classics finale on Sunday afternoon at Lamson Park.

Kelsey Vincent went 3-for-3 at the plate and capped of the Ragin' Cajuns home run spree with a solo home run – her third of the season – in the second inning.

Lexie Elkins, who picked up her eighth of the season, was the other Cajun with a multiple-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate while tying for game-high honors with two RBI. Haley Hayden and Aleah Craighton, who also hit home runs, also collected two RBI.

Kylee Jo Trahan matched her season-high with eight strikeouts (Feb. 13 vs. Samford) in picking up the win and surrendered just one hit in 3-2/3 innings, a solo home run by UCA's Kate Myers in the third inning. Macey Smith and Alison Deville combined for 1-1/3 innings of hitless relief.

Sunday's win gave Louisiana (8-1) a 3-1 record in the 30th Louisiana Classics, adding to a 2-1 showing in three matchups with No. 5 Oregon prior to Sunday's UCA tilt.

No. 7 Louisiana remains at Lamson Park, and continues its current 10-game homestand, when it hosts Texas Tech (4-6) in a 4 p.m., doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 25. That will be followed by the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational (Feb. 26-28) featuring Alcorn State and Rutgers.

Hayden jumpstarted the Cajuns' offense, leading off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to center field. It was the West Monroe product's first home run of the season and fifth time in the past two seasons she's led off a game with a home run.

Two more runs were added in the frame before UCA's Shivaun Landeros could retire the side. With two outs, Vincent doubled, and then Craighton followed up with a home run to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Louisiana sent 13 batters to the plate in the second inning, piling up seven runs to put the game out of reach. The highlight came when Elkins (two-run) and Vincent (solo) homered back-to-back to grow the lead to 8-0. Sara Corbello and pinch hitter Miranda Grotenhuis recorded RBI singles for the final two runs of the inning.

Myers' home run opened the top of the third inning and provided the lone run for the Bears (5-4).

Elkins and Vincent provided another one-two punch in the lineup, singling back-to-back to start the bottom half of the third. Elkins moved to third base on a foul out down the right field line by Craighton and score the game's final run on a sacrifice fly to right field by DJ Sanders.

Trahan closed out her second start of the weekend with a pair of strikeouts after Hannah Stirton and Bailey Reynolds walked to lead off the fourth inning.

UCA was held off the scoreboard as Smith entered in relief and closed out the fourth inning, and then retired the first two Bears hitters in the fifth inning before giving way to Deville who induced a fly ball out from Sarah Bigej for the game's final out.

The two teams met in a Lamson-Park based tournament for the third straight season (2014-16). Louisiana improved to 3-0 all-time against Central Arkansas.

Eagles Soar Past UMass-Lowell, 8-3

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Georgia Southern softball team wrapped up an impressive weekend of play at the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational Sunday, rallying in a big way for an 8-3 win over UMass-Lowell. Eagles went 4-1 for the event, hitting .294 as a team, and scored 28 runs on 45 hits while getting a staff ERA of 2.03.

The Eagles got off to a fast start in the first inning as Witkowski and Taylor Rogers singled and then moved up on Emily Snider's sacrifice bunt. Witkowski scored the game's first run when Morgan Robinson drove her home with a sacrifice fly to right field. UML came right back and scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

After the Riverhawks tacked on a run in the second inning, Witkowski led off the third inning with a triple and later scored the first of seven unanswered runs to make it a 3-2 game in favor of UML.

In the fifth inning, the Eagles erupted for six runs. Alesha Mann, India Davis and Witkowski all reached on infield singles and Mann scored on Rogers' sacrifice fly. Snider then smoked a single to center field to plate Davis and Witkowski later scored when UML committed an error. With two runners on, Hamilton obliterated a 2-2 offering to left-center field for a three-run home run to make it 8-3 and force a pitching change.

Witkowski capped off an impressive weekend with three more hits and three runs scored. Rogers had two hits while Snider, Hamilton (3 RBIs), Hannah Farrell, Mann and Davis each had one of the 10 hits.

Camp (W, 2-3) went the distance, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Texas State Suffers Setback Sunday Against Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. – The Texas State softball team ended the Louisiana Tech Invitational with a 5-0 setback against the host school Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats finished the weekend with a 4-1 record as they fall to 9-2 on the year.

Texas State has two more non-conference tournaments on the 2016 schedule, starting next weekend at the Grand Canyon Invitational.

The Bobcats started off by drawing three straight walks in the top of the first, but were unable to score as a fielder's choice retired Kelli Baker out at home for the first out and a double play ball by Kendall Wiley ended the inning.

A one-out single with a runner on second in the bottom of the first scored the first run of the day for Louisiana Tech. After the hit, Rupp sent the batters down in order with a pair of strikeouts.

The Lady Techsters added another run in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth to build their 5-0 lead.

Texas State had an opportunity to score in the third after moving Baker over to second after a lead-off single. A two-out single to the outfield by Wiley for the second hit of the inning ultimately proved to lead to the final out as Baker got thrown out trying to score.

In the bottom of the fifth, Quincy Charleston came in relief for Randi Rupp with no outs and the bases loaded. Charleston got the next three batters out in order with a pair of fielder's choices and a strikeout looking to end the inning, making that the first scoreless inning for Louisiana Tech.

Charleston finished the game by retiring all six batters she faced with two strikeouts.

Texas State ended the day registering five hits while stranding eight runners on base. Rupp was dealt her second loss of the season in 4.0 innings pitched. She tallied four strikeouts in the loss.

Baker led the Bobcats with a pair of hits. Kayleigh Norte, Taylor Webb, and Wiley recorded the other Bobcat hits. Texas State drew four walks in the game while striking out just three times.

The Bobcats will continue tournament play next weekend at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. where they will compete against Northern Illinois, Montana, and Grand Canyon. First pitch against Northern Illinois on Feb. 26 is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT. Texas State will play two games Friday, two games Saturday, and one on Sunday.

Coyne Tosses Complete Game as ULM Drops 5-3 Contest to East Tennessee State

NASHVILLE – Junior Melanie Coyne threw her third complete game of the season but a lack of timely hitting resulted in a 5-3 defeat for ULM softball Sunday morning against East Tennessee State at the Tiger Classic inside Tiger Softball Field.

The Warhawks (8-3) had their fair share of opportunities, converting 2-12 runners in scoring position and 0-4 runners on third and less than two out. Junior Rochelle Roberts (.553) finished the contest with two hits including a triple and a stolen base.

The Bucs (4-3) surged out to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third. After Kelsey Chernak walked and Bethany Cowart singled, Taylor Carter plated them on a double to the gap in left center. Danielle Knoetze then scored Carter on a two-out double to center.

ULM chipped away at the ETSU lead in the bottom half when freshman Sydney McKay scored sophomore Samantha Agamaite, who walked and advanced to third on a dropped fly earlier in the inning, on an RBI single through the left side.

Knoetze again widened the gap to three in the top of the fifth, hitting a two-out solo homer to left center to put the Bucs back on top 4-1.

The Warhawks bounced back in the bottom of the fifth after senior Faith Bohack started the inning with a bunt single, stole second and later scored on fellow senior Amye Barre's single down the left field line.

ETSU would again counter in the top of the seventh with another solo home run to left center, this one via Carter which added another insurance run at 5-2.

Junior McKinley Marks hit a two-out solo homer to right on a 2-2 count in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game, but freshman pinch hitter Grace Srichantra grounded out to third to end the game.

ULM concluded the weekend 4-1 at the Tiger Classic. Roberts highlighted the Warhawks' offense, batting .667 (12-18) complemented by 10 runs, six RBIs, a double, a triple and two home runs. She also converted 7-7 stolen bases. McKay spearheaded the Warhawks with eight RBIs while Barre (.412) and Marks (.429) also had productive weekends at the dish.
