ULM Tops UT Arlington in 2-1 Pitcher’s Duel

ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior Melanie Coyne tossed a complete-game and senior Amye Barre lifted a solo home run late during ULM’s 2-1 victory over UT Arlington Friday afternoon inside Allan Saxe Field.

Coyne (15-15) scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run in what turned out to be her 18th complete game of the season.

Mallory Foster put the Mavericks (25-12, 4-9 SBC) ahead 1-0 in the sixth on a solo homer to right field after going down 1-2 in the count. Senior Amye Barre responded shortly after in the seventh with the aforementioned solo home run to left field that tied the game at one apiece.

Junior McKiney Marks then walked, allowing pinch runner Hunter Hogan to steal second on a full count with Coyne batting as UTA’s middle infield was positioned too deep to cover the bag. Coyne eventually put the ball in play and the Mavericks’ first baseman misplayed the hop which allowed Hogan to score the go-ahead run on a close play at the plate.

The Warhawks (21-13, 6-10 SBC) handed UTA ace Samantha Clakley her ninth loss of the season. Barre and McKay each notched two hits and sophomore Cheyanne Lyon extended her reached base streak to 13 on a single to first in the fourth.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow in a 1 p.m. CT doubleheader.
