Georgia State claims Top Seeds for 2016 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships
NEW ORLEANS – The 2016 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship brackets have been finalized with action set to begin from the City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans this Thursday.
The women’s tournament kicks-off the event on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. The women’s championship match will take place on Sunday, April 24 at 10 a.m. with the men’s championship match to follow at 2 p.m. All matches will take place on the main courts at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans, weather permitting. In the case of weather postponements, additional announcements will be made on the times and locations of all matches.
Georgia State earned the top seeds on both the men’s and women’s sides this year. The Georgia State men enter the tournament ranked No. 58 in the ITA Men’s National Team Rankings. The Panthers have won eight of their last nine matches and are the only men’s team in the Top 75 heading into the tournament. The Panthers earn a bye to the semifinals as the No. 1 seed.
The Georgia State women’s team enters the tournament ranked No. 48 in the ITA Women’s National Team rankings, one of three teams in the Top 75. The Panthers are led by senior Linn Timmermann who is 11-5 on the season and has won two Student-Athlete of the Week awards this year. Georgia State earned a bye to the quarterfinal round with the top seed.
South Alabama is No. 51 and UT Arlington is No. 64 to round out the three women’s teams in the ITA Top 75. South Alabama earned the No. 2 seed while UT Arlington earned the No. 3 seed in the women’s tournament.
The women’s bracket features 10 teams and begins on Thursday morning for a second consecutive season. No. 8 seed UL Monroe plays No. 9 Appalachian State while No. 7 Texas State takes on No. 10 Arkansas State to begin the tournament.
The men’s tournament features a seven-team format this year and begins with the quarterfinal round on Friday afternoon. The quarterfinal matchup between No. 4 UL Lafayette and No. 5 UT Arlington will be played at the UNO Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of New Orleans, due to space restrictions at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.
Thursday night the Sun Belt Conference will announce its postseason award winners and all-conference honorees at its postseason banquet.

Seeding Criteria:
1. Top 75 based on ITA rankings that are released the Monday prior to the Tournament. Teams with a top 75 ITA ranking are protected and their seeding will not be adjusted based on head to head conference matches.
2. Lowest cumulative ITA ranking of an institution’s top three wins. Based on rankings that are released the Monday prior to the Tournament.
3. Once the remaining institutions are seeded based on the lowest cumulative ITA score of top three wins, beginning with the highest seeded team outside of the top 75 ITA and moving downward, institutions which are stacked will be moved up or down an unlimited number of times so long as stacked with an opponent to which there was head to head competition
