Wages' Near Perfect Game Earns Senior Community Coffee Student-Athlete of the Week Honors
NEW ORLEANS - Georgia State's Wayne Wages highlights this week's Sun Belt Baseball Community Coffee Student-Athletes of the Week as the left-handed pitcher went eight and one-third of a near perfect game on Friday night in a 10-0 win over Appalachian State.

The senior just missed throwing what would have been the first no-hitter in Georgia State history. His is the fourth one-hitter in Panther annals and first since 2012. He struck out a career-high nine and walked none. Wages retired the first 25 batters in order, including a strikeout for the first out of the ninth inning before pinch hitter Jason Curtis singled up the middle. Wages then ended the game with a strikeout and a popup.

He threw 104 pitches, going to a three-ball count just three times. Wages' gem gave head coach Greg Frady his 300th victory at Georgia State. Wages has won three straight starts and thrown 16 consecutive scoreless innings after holding ULM without a run in seven innings last Friday. Over his last three starts, he has allowed three runs on nine hits with 21 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.

Wages, a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honoree, was named the Sun Belt Baseball Community Coffee Pitcher of the Week.

Arkansas State's Joe Schrimpf took home the Sun Belt Baseball Community Coffee Student-Athlete of the Week honor after he tallied two hits in each of the Red Wolves’ four games, all wins. He led the team with a .471 average, .550 on-base percentage, and .824 slugging percentage while scoring a team-high six runs, including the game-winning run in Sunday’s 5-4 walk-off win.

He began the week with a 2-for-4 performance against SIU with two runs scored and a RBI. He was 2-for-5 in Friday’s game with a RBI and followed with a 2-for-3 outing with a home run and three RBIs Saturday. The St. Louis, Mo., native finished the weekend with a 2-for-5 game with a double and a triple, the latter of which set up the game-winning score to allow the Red Wolves to complete their first sweep of the season.

After dropping the first game of a three-game non-conference set this weekend to Southern (BR) the South Alabama Jaguars rebounded for back-to-back wins as they pushed their season win total to 30-11 to become the first Sun Belt team to hit the 30-win plateau.

The UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns took two-of-three from the Texas State Bobcats this weekend and are now 27-13 and 12-6 in Sun Belt play. The wins moved the Cajuns up to No. 12 in the latest NCAA RPI and also several top 25 rankings.
