Cajuns, Jaguars Split Regular Season Title; Cajuns Earn No. 1 Seed

Championship Bracket
NEW ORLEANS – The UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns and South Alabama Jaguars are the 2016 Sun Belt Conference baseball regular season co-champions.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (37-19, 21-9 Sun Belt) entered the season's final weekend two games out of first-place in the league standings behind the Jaguars (38-18, 21-9 SBC). The Cajuns swept the UL Monroe Warhawks to finish in a tie for the top spot as the Jaguars dropped their final two contests to Troy after winning the opener on Thursday night.

The Ragin’ Cajuns earned the No. 1 seed based on the head-to-head tie-breaker as they took two-of-three from the Jaguars last weekend. The Ragin’ Cajuns regular season title is the second in the past three years for the program while the Jaguars share of the crown is their third in the last four years.

With the No. 1 seed in hand, UL Lafayette will now turn its focus to the 2016 tournament, hosted by Texas State University, at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas. The Ragin’ Cajuns will open up play against eighth-seeded Arkansas State (27-27, 13-17 SBC) on Wednesday, May 25, the final game of the night, at 7:30 p.m. CT.

This Cajuns squad will be looking to become the first team in league history to win three consecutive tournament titles. The Cajuns have played in each of the last three championship games, losing in 2013, and have advanced to the Super Regionals the past two seasons.

The Red Wolves enter the tournament having won back-to-back conference series with their recent win coming on back-to-back ninth inning rallies.

Second-seeded USA will take on No. 7 UT Arlington (29-26, 15-15 SBC) on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT. USA is seeking its first tournament title since 2005 as the program has won 11 overall since the league began sponsoring the sport in 1978.

The Little Rock Trojans have had quite a banner season in 2016 as they’ve won a school record 17 league games and have earned their highest Sun Belt tournament seed in program history (third). The Trojans, who lead the Sun Belt in many offensive categories, are playing in their first tournament since 2013.

The Trojans will take on sixth-seeded Georgia Southern (33-23, 16-14 SBC) in Wednesday’s first game at 9:00 a.m. CT. Earlier this season the Trojans defeated the Eagles, 2-1, in their season series.

Troy (32-24, 17-13 SBC), enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 seed and tournament host, Texas State (30-26, 16-14 SBC). Troy defeated the Bobcats 2-1 in the season series and enters the tournament having won five of its last six games, including back-to-back conference series wins.

The game will be played on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. CT.

This tournament field marks the first time since 2010 that all eight seeds have .500 or better winning percentages.

The double-elimination tournament begins play on Wednesday, May 25 at 9:00 a.m. CT and will be conducted over five days culminating with the championship game on Sunday, May 29 at 1:00 p.m. CT. The first four games of the championship will be available via webstream on SunBeltSports.org. The remaining games, including Sunday’s championship, will be aired live on ESPN3 and will be available on the WatchESPN app.

Championship festivities get underway on Tuesday night with Championship Family Night, a celebration of this season’s accomplishments both on and off the field for the student-athletes in attendance. There will be a home run derby, autograph session and much more for those in attendance.
