BRYAN, Texas – The Texas State women's golf team had a solid start in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Thursday afternoon with a team score of 296. The Bobcats are currently sitting in a tie for 10th place in the 18 team field just six strokes back of being in the top six.
"We started off really good today," said head coach Mike Akers. "Through the front nine we were in really great shape and then lost some strokes on our second nine. Overall we're in great position to make a run for the top six."
As a team, the Bobcats were very consistent Thursday afternoon. Anne-Charlotte Mora led the Bobcats with a 1-over-par 73 while Millie Saroha and Lora Assad each turned in a 74 for Texas State. Maty Monzingo and Raksha Phadke each carded a 75.
The Bobcats jumped out to a fast start on the back nine, making the turn at even par. With three birdies and a pair of bogeys, Mora led the 'Cats on the opening nine with a 1-under-par 35. After a double bogey to begin the day, Phadke rattled off three birdies to ultimately finish the nine at even par.
All five Bobcats recorded a birdie in round one. Phadke and Mora led the 'Cats with three, Saroha had two, and Monzingo and Assad each had one. Assad birdie on the par 5 5th was a chip-in. As a team, the Bobcats led the tournament with 61 pars.
Georgia and Arizona are the only two teams under par after round one. The Bulldogs carded a 4-under-par 284 to sit just one stroke ahead of Arizona. Furman and Campbell are three strokes back of Arizona at even par.
Bianca Pagdanganan of Gonzaga turned in a 5-under-par 67 to be in the lead at the NCAA Regional. In all, 19 players carded rounds under par.
The Bobcats will tee off on hole 10 starting at 8:00 a.m. with Maty Monzingo. Texas State will be playing with Louisville and Kent State. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
