Mountaineers Blank Panthers in 0-0 Draw
ATLANTA - Appalachian State University men's soccer (4-6-5, 0-1-2 SBC) and Georgia State (10-4-1, 2-0-1 SBC) put forth an excellent defensive battle in a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Appalachian posts its fifth shutout of the season, which is the most since 2015 when the Mountaineers finished the campaign with six shutouts. Jake Agnew captured his fourth-career clean sheet in just his second start of the season, as he played all 110 minutes and came away with three saves. It was an impressive performance for Agnew and the App defense as GSU leads the Sun Belt in scoring, while it is the first league match this season the Panthers have failed to score.
"Excellent effort and team performance tonight," head coach Jason O'Keefe stated after the match. "Georgia State is a very good team, and we were able to earn a point on the road, which is massive. Our team continues to learn and improve. We need to recover and get ready for a talented Presbyterian team who had a huge win tonight."
The Mountaineers put together some opportunities on offense with 13 shot attempts and three shots on goal. Justin Pruitt looked to score in the first half with a shot on frame, but Yannic Horn stopped the ball in its tracks. Horn went into the contest with a Sun Belt-best .77 goals against average. Felix Kollmannthaler gave App its second shot on target in the 66th minute, which would have given App a 1-0 edge if it had crossed into the net, but Horn came away with his second of three saves on the evening.
Both teams didn't give in during both overtime periods with each team's goalkeepers keeping the match at a scoreless stalemate. Agnew came away with a big save in the first frame, and Tyquann Perinchief's header that was clean would be stopped by Horn.
App State will head to Clinton, S.C. for its final non-conference match of the season against Presbyterian, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
