Men's Basketball Sun Belt Conference

Men's Basketball Championship Game Notebook

No. 4 vs. No. 6
There have been two prior matchups of No. 4 vs. No. 6 seeds, or lower, in the men’s tournament final: 2013 (#6 WKU 65, #4 FIU 63) and 2012 (#7 WKU 74, #5 UNT 70)

Top Seeds Toppled
This tournament is the first since 2013 that neither of the top two seeds has advanced to the final.

State Lines Drawn
This is the first ever matchup between Sun Belt schools from the state of Alabama and Texas in the Sun Belt men’s basketball championship game

Newbies
The last men’s basketball program to win the Sun Belt tournament title that was in its fourth season of full membership or less was Louisiana in 1992 (first season). Texas State joined the Sun Belt Conference, along with UTA, prior to the 2014-15 academic year.

Championship Game History
Texas State will make its first-ever appearance in the Sun Belt men’s basketball championship game and its first conference tournament final since 1999.

Troy is making its second Sun Belt championship game appearance in school history and its first since the 2010 tournament (L, 63-66 vs. #2 North Texas).

Parity
Today’s championship game will insure that the Sun Belt does not have a repeat men’s basketball tournament champion for the fourth consecutive season.

Lower Seeds Prevail
Seven different times a No. 4 seed or lower has won the Sun Belt men’s basketball tournament title.

2013: No. 6 WKU
2012: No. 7 WKU
2007: No. 5 North Texas
1986: No. 4 Jacksonville
1984: No. 5 UAB
1980: No. 5 VCU
1979: No. 4 Jacksonville

Cinderella Story
This year’s tournament was the first since 2008 in which a true No. 12 seed won a game. There have been three tournaments in that span that did not feature divisional seeding and seeded 12 teams, or more, based on the final regular-season standings.
