MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida – Weather was the opponent on Sunday as the Sun Belt Conference opened its 2017 Men's Golf Championships at the par-71, 6,900-yard course Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Teams were scheduled to play 36-holes on Sunday before playing 18 on Monday followed by match play on Tuesday.
However, severe weather moved through the area around 10:00 a.m. (CT) forcing a three-hour, 20-minute delay in the middle of round one. Teams took back to the course at 1:26 p.m. (CT) and resumed round one. Georgia State jumped out to a six-shot lead as the Panthers fired a six-under par 278 in the first round. Troy was second at an even-par 284. Georgia Southern was third at one-over.
Round two began with a rolling start as teams moved straight from round one into round two. Only one group was able to finish both rounds on Sunday. The remaining 19 groups will return to the Raven at 7:30 a.m. (CT) on Monday to finish out round two.
Round three will commence at 9:00 a.m. (CT) with all pairings remaining the same. Course officials will change hole locations following round two.
Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk holds the first round lead as he carded a five-under par 66. Georgia State's Alex Herrmann sits in second with a four-under par 67. Troy's Calum Masters, GSU's Nathan Mallonee and the Eagles' Jake Storey are tied for third at three-under par.
Individual scores for round two are unofficial, as the round is not yet completed.
The top four teams at the conclusion of stroke play will advance to Tuesday's match play semifinals. The top finishing team will square off with the No. 4 seed and will tee off of hole No. 1 while the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds will tee off on hole No. 10. Both groups will tee off at 7:30 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday.
The Sun Belt Conference will continue to broadcast live from the 18th green on Monday. Fans can access this video by visiting www.SunBeltSports.org. Live scoring will be available through GolfStat.com as well as on the Men’s Golf Championship Central page.
