FOLEY, Ala. – The Sun Belt Conference announced the 2018 Women’s Soccer All-Conference teams and individual award winners on Tuesday afternoon. The selections were made in a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches.
Texas State junior, Kaylee Davis, was named the league's Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate, Heather Martin, a junior, was tabbed as the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
South Alabama’s Brenna McPartlan, was named Freshman of the Year and Coastal Carolina’s Hannah Miller was named the league's Newcomer of the Year. Texas State's Kat Conner was chosen as the Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Davis, a 2017 First Team All-Sun Belt selection, led the league in goals scored with 13 in conference play while also leading the league in points with 27. She started all 10 conference matches for the league-leading Bobcats. The junior forward had five game-winning goals and was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week a record four times in 2018. Davis’ 16 total goals this season ranked third overall in the NCAA.
Martin, a 2017 First Team All-Sun Belt selection, started 14 of 16 matches in goal for the Bobcats. She had 77 saves and allowed only seven goals on the year. In conference play, the junior led all keepers with a 0.932 save percentage and shutouts with six. She logged more than 1,250 minutes in goal this season.
South Alabama’s McPartlan made an immediate impact for the Jaguars this season leading the team in goals, assists and points. McPartlan started every match as a true freshman and becomes the fifth Jaguar in the last six years to be named Freshman of the Year.
Miller led the Chanticleers with four goals, one assist and 52 shots after transferring to Coastal Carolina from Creighton University. Three of Miller’s four goals came during conference play and two of those three were game-winners.
Texas State's Conner led her Bobcats to an 8-0-2 league mark, the team’s best conference record since joining the league in 2013. Conner's Bobcats are currently riding a 10-match unbeaten streak having not lost since Sept. 7. During conference play, the Bobcats tied for the league lead with 19 goals in 10 matches and tallied 20 assists. Conner’s honor is her second consecutive, having won the award in 2017. Conner’s Bobcats are 16-2-2 during league play the last two seasons.
In addition to the individual awards, the Sun Belt awarded the All-Sun Belt First and Second teams. Top-seeded Texas State placed seven individuals on the All-Sun Belt teams, four on the First Team and three on the Second Team. Second-seeded Little Rock had four on the First Team and one on the Second Team.
The championship tournament begins in Foley, Ala. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The opening match will pit No. 5 South Alabama against No. 4 Appalachian State at 10 a.m. CT. Semifinal matches take place on Friday, Nov. 2, and the championship match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. (CT). All matches of the tournament will be broadcast on ESPN+.
