MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida - Coastal Carolina University’s women’s golf team shot a 13-over par 297 on the first day of action at the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship and will enter the second day of competition in first place. The Chanticleers own a two-shot lead over Georgia Southern and three shots over reigning Sun Belt champion, Troy.
Georgia Southern's Julianna Collett and Troy's Lindsey Harrison were the only two players to card even-par in the first round. Appalachian State's Joliana Elias and Texas State's Sasikarn Somboonsup are one shot back with a one-over 72. Nine total players are within three shots of the leaders after round one.
Round one got off to a shaky start with a 90-minute weather delay before the round began. Inclement weather moved through the Emerald Coast area on Sunday morning causing the course to play much slower than anticipated.
Coastal and Georgia Southern each had three players ranked in the top 20 at the conclusion of the first round. CCU was led by Malene Krolboll Hansen and Stephanie Henning who each carded two-over par 73 on the day. Natalie Petersen and Ansley Bowman were the other two players in the top 20 for the Eagles. Petersen sits in a tie for eighth after firing a three-over par 74 while Bowman finished tied for 12th in the 55-player field through one round with a four-over 75.
Tomorrow's weather report looks to be clear, sunny and cooler. Round two begins at 7:30 a.m. (CT) from split tees on Nos. 1 and 10. The top six teams will all tee off on the No. 1 hole, while Nos. 7 through 11 will go off the No. 10 tee on Monday.
