MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers opened the first round of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship with a 10-over 294 in Sunday's opening round.
CCU was led by a pair of one-over 72s from Luiz Ruiz and Thadd Obecny, who are both tied for seventh in the individual standings.
The Chants lead South Alabama and UTA by one stroke heading into Monday's second round. CCU battled the wind and impending weather all morning. Texas State sits fourth overall with Georgia Southern and Troy tied for fifth in the team standings. Five teams are within four strokes of Coastal after one round.
Three are tied for the individual lead. Appalachian State's Tripp Summerlin, ULM's Joao Girao and Texas State's Alvaro Carol Estrems each carded a first round one-under 70. 15 golfers are within three strokes of the leading trio.
Summerlin was four-under par with four holes to go before making a double-bogey on No. 9. Estrems was six-under with four to play before taking an eight on the ninth hole.
The ninth hole played at 5.15 strokes in round one, or 1.15 strokes over par. Only one player in the field of 60 made birdie on No. 9.
Sunday's average score was 76.48 as the wind and rain picked up towards the end of the first round. Sunday's first round was very similar to the conditions the women faced last week at the Raven.
Tomorrow's weather report looks to be much better than today's first round report with only a slight chance of rain. Round two begins at 7:30 a.m. (CT) from split tees on Nos. 1 and 10. The top six teams will all tee off on the No. 1 hole, while Nos. 7 through 12 will go off the No. 10 tee on Monday.
