LAFAYETTE, La. - Easton Johnson singled up the middle to score pinch runner Boone Montgomery from second as the UTA Mavericks went on to defeat Arkansas State, 5-4, in ten innings on Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament.
The win ended the UTA's ten-game losing streak and also snapped a 20-game losing streak when trailing after seven innings. The Mavericks (22-33) will now face top-seeded Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
Daniel James (2-5) earned the win for the Mavericks pitching two innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Christian Hollie had three hits for the Mavericks and Johnson added two, including the game-winner in the bottom of the tenth. Noah Vaughn scored twice for the Mavericks and added two hits on the night, one a home run to left field in the bottom of the second.
Casey Vaughn led the Red Wolves with three hits and two runs scored. Vaughn was a home run shy of the cycle. Winston Welch drove in two runs for A-State (20-32) in the top of the seventh inning.
The game saw a 50-minute delay as lightning struck in the bottom of the sixth inning. UTA had the lead, 2-1, when the delay started. As soon as play resumed, the Red Wolves took the lead, 4-2, in the top half of the seventh.
The Mavericks tied things up in the bottom of the eighth before winning the game in the bottom of the tenth.
The loss was the first for A-State when leading after seven innings since March 18.
