Troy Scores Three in the Eighth as they Down Little Rock, 5-1

LAFAYETTE, La. - Troy scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and won its first Sun Belt Tournament game in four years with a 5-1 victory over Texas State on Wednesday at the Sun Belt baseball tournament in Lafayette, La.

The Trojans (39-18) had lost seven straight and nine of their last 10 tournament games prior to the win – it was the first postseason win in the Mark Smartt era.

Texas State (28-27-1) struck for its lone run in the second inning before Troy (39-18) equaled that with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Trojans then took over the lead in the bottom half of the seventh on a Cole Prestegard solo home run to the opposite field.

A three-run eighth broke the game open to secure the win for the Trojans. Joey Denison singled up the middle with one out and two batters and a stolen base later, Rigsby Mosley singled in Denison. Sadler Goodwin then tripled in Mosley and Brody Binder.

Bobcat starter Nicholas Fraze held the Trojans in check for the first six innings of the ball game – allowing just one run on five hits around six strikeouts. Brayden Theriot (1-4) took the loss for the Bobcats as he allowed four runs on four hits.

With the win the Trojans will take on the winner of Wednesday's final game between Louisiana and Little Rock. That game will be played on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
