LAFAYETTE, La. - Seth Shuman pitched a complete game, striking out six batters and allowing just three hits and one earned run as the Georgia Southern Eagles eliminated the UTA Mavericks, 3-1, from the Sun Belt baseball tournament on Thursday morning.
Shuman earned the win to improve to 8-5 on the season as the Eagles (30-25) advance to face the loser of game 9 between top-seeded Coastal Carolina and fourth-seeded South Alabama. The 30th win marked the 18th time in Coach Rodney Hennon's 19 seasons that the Eagles have reached that threshold.
UTA's season comes to a close at 22-35. Logan Austin (4-1) took the loss for the Mavericks.
The Eagles tallied 11 hits on the day led by Mitchell Golden who had two hits on the day for Georgia Southern and drove in two runs. The top three hitters for the Eagles, Jason Swan, Golden and Austin Thompson, went a combined 6-for-12 in the game and drove in all three Eagle runs.
Josh Minjarez had two of the three hits for UTA and Easton Johnson drove in Minjarez with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
The Eagles strung together four singles in the third to answer the UTA run and even the contest at 1-1. Thompson drove in Swan from second with single down the left field line.
A single by Georgia Southern's Steven Curry with one out in the seventh, followed by a walk put a pair of runners aboard in the seventh. A soft ground ball advanced runners to second and third with Golden due up and two outs in the inning. Golden drove the 0-2 pitch to center for a two-RBI single to give the Eagles a lead and some insurance heading into the late innings.
