Coastal Powers Past South Alabama to Advance to Saturday's Semifinals

LAFAYETTE, La. - Zach Biermann drove in five runs and Seth Lancaster and Kevin Woodall hit back-to-back home runs to lead Coastal Carolina to a 16-4 victory over South Alabama on Thursday at the Sun Belt baseball tournament at Russo Park in Lafayette, La.

The Chanticleers (40-17) advance to Saturday's semifinals with the win and will face the winner of Friday's first elimination game between No. 4 South Alabama and No. 5 Georgia Southern.

Coastal Carolina hit three home runs on Thursday and has six total in two games in the tournament. Adding 16 runs to its previously scored 12 gives the Chanticleers 28 for the tournament.

With the loss, the Jaguars (31-24) will take on the Eagles whom they defeated on Wednesday.

Coastal's 2-5 hitters went a combined 10-for-18 and drove in 12 of its 16 runs. Biermann was 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. Parker Chavers added four hits in five at-bats, including a grand slam in the top of the ninth.

Woodall was also 3-for-5 with a solo home run. Lancaster and Woodall had four runs scored.

The Chanticleers tallied 17 hits to South Alabama's five on Thursday. Carter Perkins had two hits for the Jaguars and drove in all four of USA's runs. Perkins has six RBI in two games in the tournament.

Matt Eardensohn (7-0) earned the win for Coastal as he went 4.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits and issuing two walks. Noah Michael (1-4) received the loss for USA.
