• Sun Belt men’s soccer is back in action with six matchups on the slate this week. Two are set for live coverage with Florida Gulf Coast at Georgia Southern on ESPN3 on Friday, Sept. 7 and Georgia State at Winthrop on ESPN+ on Saturday, Sept. 8.
• The Sun Belt posted another strong week going 6-2 over the second week of the season. The conference enters the week with an 11-4-1 non-conference record. All five teams have recorded at least one win through the early going.
• Coastal Carolina moved back into the top 25 of this week’s
United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I National Poll, ranked 19th, with Georgia Southern appearing among the teams receiving votes. The Chanticleers were receiving votes in last week’s national poll. In this week’s Southeast Region poll, Coastal Carolina leads the Sun Belt contingent in second, followed by Georgia Southern (third) and Appalachian State (10th).
• Sixteen different players have scored at least one goal so far this season. Appalachian State and Georgia Southern boast the only multi-goal scorers. Appalachian State freshman forward Camden Holbrook and Georgia Southern senior midfielder/forward Javier Carbonell sit atop the league at four goals each. Mountaineers senior defenseman Ian Bennett and Eagles junior forward Adam Davie have connected on two goals each.
• Georgia State junior defender Kyle Clinton is
one of 31 student-athletes on the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Men's Watch List.
• The 2018 Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship is set for Nov. 7-11 at Eagle Field/Erk Park in Statesboro, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southern.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Javier Carbonell, Georgia Southern (Sr., MF/F, Madrid, Spain)
Georgia Southern senior midfielder/forward Javier Carbonell delivered a pair of goals and an assist in the Eagles' 3-0 home-opening win over North Florida, the first win in a home opener since 2011. Carbonell is the first Georgia Southern men's soccer player to score multiple goals in consecutive matches since Oct. 27 & 31, 2004, when Lawrence Smith had two goals vs. College of Charleston and Elon. He currently leads the Sun Belt in points (10) and shots taken (12).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chris Dattalo, Coastal Carolina (Sr., GK, Long Island, N.Y.)
Coastal Carolina senior goalkeeper Chris Dattalo picked up the first shutouts of his career, playing every minute in the Chanticleers’ victories over Memphis and UAB in the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic. Dattalo stopped five shots over both matches, including four against host UAB.
