Sun Belt Announces 2018-19 Women's Tennis Postseason All-Conference, Individual Awards

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference announced its 2018-19 women's tennis postseason honors Wednesday, headlined by South Alabama sophomore Yu Fujioka named Player of the Year, Coastal Carolina sophomore Somer Dalla-Bona named Player to Watch, Georgia State freshman Eva Chivu named Freshman of the Year, Coastal Carolina graduate student Jennifer Brown named Newcomer of the Year and Appalachian State head coach Blake Mosley named Coach of the Year.

These awards, along with the All-Sun Belt first and second teams, were voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.

Fujioka earns Sun Belt Player of the Year honors after being named Freshman of the Year a season ago. With a 14-2 spring singles record, she ranks tied for third in the conference in spring winning percentage (.875). Fujioka went 7-0 in league dual matches in singles, all at No. 2. The All-Sun Belt first-team selection won 13 singles matches in straight sets, including five in conference play. Fujioka holds a 35-2 career singles record in dual matches.

Also with a 14-2 spring singles record, Dalla-Bona enters Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championship with a 13-match winning streak at No. 3 singles. Dalla-Bona garnered recognition on the All-Sun Belt first team in singles after going undefeated in league play (10-0). She closed the regular season with back-to-back Sun Belt Athlete of the Week accolades.

Chivu is making an immediate impact in her first season with the Panthers, earning a spot on the All-Sun Belt first team in singles to go along with her Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honor. She enters the conference championship on a seven-match winning streak and a 20-11 overall singles record. Chivu's 12 singles wins this spring all have come at the No. 1 spot. She won eight of her nine singles matches against conference foes.

Brown closed the spring season with a 10-4 record and a 4-1 mark in Sun Belt matches in singles. Playing primarily at the No. 2 spot, the All-Sun Belt second-team pick posted the league's best record at 8-1. She also earned All-Sun Belt first-team honors in doubles combining for a 7-1 record in conference play.

Mosley guided Appalachian State to its first Sun Belt regular-season title, closing the regular season on a four-match winning streak. His Mountaineers has won their last eight matches at home since falling to Davidson in the season opener on January 19.

Coastal Carolina led the way in All-Sun Belt honors with three singles players and one double team recognized.
