NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana’s Gunner Leger has been selected as a 2019 Senior CLASS Award® First-Team All-American.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Leger missed much of his senior season with injuries, but as a junior in 2017 Leger became the first player in program history to be named a semifinalist of the Golden Spikes Award. He was also named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, garnered All-Sun Belt Conference First Team honors, received ABCA/Rawlings All-America Second Team honors, was named a third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
He Led the Sun Belt and ranked 13th in the nation in victories with 10 and ranked 19th in the country with a 1.97 ERA. He also ranked nationally in WHIP (0.99), hits allowed per nine innings (6.50), games started (15) and strikeouts (84). He finished the season in the top 10 in the Sun Belt in innings pitched (91.1), strikeouts, games started and opponent’s batting average (.206).
