Troy University Announced as a Presenting Sponsor of Baseball Championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Sun Belt Conference announced Troy University as a presenting sponsor of the Sun Belt Baseball Championship on Wednesday. The sponsorship, which includes brand recognition and community and customer engagement, is a five-year agreement, starting with the 2020 championship.

The 43rd annual Sun Belt Baseball Championship is set for May 19-24, 2020, at Riverwalk Stadium and will be the first Sun Belt Baseball Championship hosted in a minor league park since 2012 (Bowling Green Hot Rods).

“The Sun Belt Conference is grateful to Troy University and their support of our league and its baseball championship,” said Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill. “The Sun Belt looks forward to our partnership with Troy, the Central Alabama Sports Commission, the city of Montgomery and the Biscuits organization.”

Baseball has long been one of the Sun Belt's premier sports with multiple teams vying for bids to the NCAA Baseball Championship year in and year out, having sent two or more teams to the NCAA tournament in seven of the past 12 years. Last season the league ranked tenth in the final RPI standings released by the NCAA, marking the fourth consecutive season the league finished with a top 10 RPI. It was also the third consecutive season the league won more than 150 non-conference games.

Coastal Carolina, which hosted the 2019 Championship, has claimed the previous two Sun Belt tournament titles. The Chanticleers were the first tournament hosts since 2000 (South Alabama) to claim the tournament title.

In May 2018, the Sun Belt announced an agreement with the Central Alabama Sports Commission and the city of Montgomery to host the Baseball Championship at Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium each spring from 2022-2024. Riverwalk Stadium is home to the Montgomery Biscuits, the Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

“Montgomery is the perfect home for the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament. It is located in the geographic center of the league’s member institutions and beautiful Riverwalk Stadium is an excellent showcase for the quality baseball played in the Sun Belt,” said Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. “[Montgomery] Mayor Todd Strange and the Central Alabama Sports Commission were integral to making this happen. Troy University is proud of the Sun Belt Conference and we are also proud the tournament will be held in the River Region.”
