BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The first day of competition of the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships ended with Arkansas State leading the women’s side with 51 points while Arkansas State and South Alabama are tied with 39 points apiece on the men's side.
The Championships will resume Tuesday morning with the resumption of the heptathlon starting at 9 a.m. CT. The field events begin at 11:30 a.m. CT followed by the remainder of the running finals at 2 p.m. CT. Day two will be broadcast live on ESPN+ starting at 2 p.m. CT with coverage of the women's mile finals.
The first event final of the day saw A-State's Camryn Newton-Smith claim top honors in the pentathlon with 4,071 points - just eight points shy of tying the Sun Belt Championship record. A-State's Hayden Hampton holds the heptathlon lead after day one with 2,944 points - followed by Louisiana's Chandler Mixon with 2,920.
USA's Autavia Fluker claimed her second shot put title with a toss of 50'4". Rickssen Opont claimed the title for the Jags in the men's shot put with a 54'5" throw. ULM's Jasmine Scott-Kilgo won the women's long jump, leaping 19'11". Georgia State's Lotte Meyberg picked up the title in the women's 5,000-meters after finishing second a year ago. A-State's Bennett Pascoe was the men's 5k winner.
The final event of the night - the distance medley relay - was won by Troy on the women's side and Texas State on the men's side.
