Six Wins Highlight Women's Golf 2019-20 Season

NEW ORLEANS - There was just over a month of women's golf left to be played in the Sun Belt Conference before the season was cut short in early March. Below we take a look at the many highlights from our teams this season.

  • There were six total team wins this year by women's golf programs - three each coming from Arkansas State and Troy. Texas State was one of three teams (Coastal Carolina and Troy) to post rounds of 280 or lower - with the Bobcats posting a Sun Belt low of 277 back in the fall.
  • Eight of the 11 Sun Belt women's golf teams were ranked in the top 150 by Golfstat and Golfweek.com.
  • Troy's Nicole Lorup, one of several individual golfers to win a tournament title, posted a Sun Belt low 65 earlier this year.
  • Five teams posted season average scores at or below 300, led by Arkansas State (296.52).
  • The Red Wolves, under the guidance of M.J. Desbiens Shaw, set a new program low for stroke averages and have steadily improved each of the past six seasons.
  • The A-State 2019-20 season also saw the record low round of 284 on two occasions as well as beating the previous record low 3-round total (884) four different times. Individually, A-State's Grayson Gladden posted the lowest single-season scoring average for the Red Wolves (73.52) and ranked third in the league this season.
  • The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team suffered through a shortened spring season like all of the other golf programs, but showed plenty of promise for the future with the performance of a team that had three new players.
  • The fall season saw the Chants show improvement in not only their team score, but also their team finish in each of the four events. CCU was only able to get in one event during the spring before all spring sports were canceled. The Chanticleers shot an 879 to finish eighth at the Moon Golf Invitational hosted by Louisville.
  • CCU was the highest ranked team in the Sun Belt coming in at No. 67 by Golfstat and No. 72 by Golfweek.com
  • The Troy Trojans claimed three victories this year, the program's most since the 2015-16 season.
  • Led by sophomore Lorup - the Trojans finished in the top 10 in seven of their nine events. Lorup led the way with a pair of wins and a 72.56 average. She had seven top 10 finishes herself and her score counted for the Trojans in all 25 rounds she played.
  • Texas State had five top 10 finishes in 2019-20. Senior Sasikarn Somboonsup paved the way for the Bobcats this year as she finished the campaign with a 73.42 average in 24 rounds played. She had one win and three top 10 finishes this year.
  • The Bocats were ranked 81st by both Golfstat and Golfweek.com.
  • South Alabama ranked fifth in the league in scoring average, right at 300. Siti Shaari was the team’s unquestioned leader. She was the stroke average leader with six rounds played at 71.61 and the only student-athlete to hold a season average under par this year. Shaari posted nine rounds under par and finished in the top five in five of her six events.
  • Georgia State competed in six tournaments this season with its final four tournaments being canceled. The team had a 300.61 scoring average with a low best round of 287. The team's best finish this year was a fifth-place finish at the Amelia Island Collegiate.
  • Emma Berlin led the Panthers with a 74.83 average and three top 25 finishes.

  • The Eagles had three top 10 finishes in 2019-20.
  • Jahaanvie Walia of ULM led the Warhawks with a 74.87 average this season. The Warhawks only competed in five tournaments but in those five tournaments, Walia finished in the top five in three of them. She posted a season-low 69, which ranked in the top six percent of collegiate golfers.
  • Little Rock played in seven tournaments this year, with top 10 finishes in four of those tournaments. The team had back-to-back-to-back top 10 finishes in the fall from September through mid-October. Malena Austerslaatt led the Trojans with a pair of top 10 finishes and a 76.24 average.

That final round at the Lady Red Wolves Classic helped propel the Mavericks to a program-best 54-hole score with an 883 (+19) total.
  • Kate Tran secured the best 54-hole score in program history with a four-under 212 total in March at the Kiawah Island Classic. Tran tied for third in the field of 264 competitors in the largest collegiate tournament in the nation.
