Get To Know: Coastal Carolina's Zach McCambley

As the remainder of the 2019-20 season was canceled on March 12 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Sun Belt Conference is helping others get to know Sun Belt student-athletes presented in a Q&A series on the league's website and social media platforms.

Q: Why did you choose to attend Coastal Carolina?
A: I chose to attend Coastal Carolina University because I have been vacationing down here since I was a baby and this place has always felt like home. Also, who wouldn’t want to play baseball for head coach Gary Gilmore?

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a student-athlete?
A: What I enjoy most about being a student-athlete is the fact that we get to represent our University when we dominate our opponents.

Q: What drew you to play baseball?
A: What drew me to baseball was my dad. He introduced me to the sport, and I took it from there from a very young age.

Q: What are one of your favorite memories about playing baseball?
A: I would say that every single memory that I have made over the past three years of being a Chant is what makes me smile the most. The bus rides, staying in hotels, and just everything that comes with being around the guys. Those memories will be with me forever.

Q: What is one of the best memories you have competing in a Sun Belt Championship event?
A: One of the best memories I have competing in the Sun Belt Championship is just the excitement and how involved all my teammates are regardless if they are playing or not.

Q: How does being an athlete make you a better person?
A: I think being an athlete makes me a better person because it provides drive and gives me the want to get up every day and go do what I love to do, and that’s play baseball.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being around your current group of teammates?
A: What I enjoy most about being around my current teammates is how well we all get along together. All of us are about our business but at the same time can all have a ton of fun together.

Q: In this time away from baseball, what do you miss about it the most?
A: In this time away from baseball, what I miss the most is being able to compete with a bunch of guys who are a blast to be around. I miss the locker room jokes, the long practices, and the grind of being in season. This is a real tough time for all of us right now, everyone is in a different situation whether they are a senior or a freshman. I think the only way to handle it is to take it one day at a time and do what you can to stay positive and limit negative thoughts.

Q: When you look back on your career at Coastal Carolina, what do you think about?
A: As I look back on my career thus far at CCU, the program has come a long way. A perfect example of this is even our social media and marketing people. That has come a long way from my first year here to my third. Credit to all of them and what they do because they have awesome content of us to share with the world.

Friday nights are special for me because I have really grown to appreciate that day. I wake up every Friday morning excited to know that it is my day to throw. I enjoy the "all eyes on me", the first game of the series type of deal. I enjoy setting the tone for the rest of the weekend.

Q: What is a piece of advice you have received that has stuck with you?
A: The best piece of advice I have received from pitching coach Drew Thomas is to go out there, be you and the rest of it will take care of itself. Be free and it all starts from within me.

Q: What is one thing about you that most people don't know?
A: I have the best hair on our team. Parker (Chavers) will say he does, but this is false. We had a few freshmen this year jump on the "baseball flow" train and it has not really worked out for them thus far. Hopefully, they are working on resolving that issue in the comfort of their homes where they are safe.
