Get To Know: App State's Luke Drumheller

As the remainder of the 2019-20 season was canceled on March 12 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Sun Belt Conference is helping others get to know Sun Belt student-athletes presented in a Q&A series on the league's website and social media platforms.

Q: Why did you choose to attend Appalachian State?
A: I chose Appalachian State because I fell in love with the town of Boone. While searching for my home during the recruiting process, I knew I wanted to go to a college town and Boone fit the description perfectly.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a student-athlete?
A: I enjoy my teammates and the grind we experience together the most. Getting to suit up and practice day in and day out to prepare for our season with a bunch of guys who are like brothers to me is my favorite thing about being a student-athlete.

Q: What drew you to play baseball?
A: I love baseball because it is a mental game where every pitch can dictate the outcome. Baseball is filled with many little battles. Each and every pitch is a battle.

Q: What are one of your favorite memories about playing baseball?
A: My favorite memory is an inner squad we were having my freshman year. I had struggled all fall and I was finally having a good “game”. I had a couple of hits and I remember our senior shortstop looking over to me in between innings and saying "you might be nice". For some reason, that made me feel like I belonged and I'll never forget that moment.

Q: How does being an athlete make you a better person?
A: I believe it teaches you to deal with adversity, and student-athletes face a more intense schedule than most students. I believe this teaches us to put our heads down and keep pushing where others may not face those same adversities.

Q. In this time away from baseball, what do you miss about it the most?
A: I miss having a schedule to follow. I have no obligations at home and I miss working toward something every day.
