2021 Sun Belt Conference Championship individual medalist junior Ben Carr secured the first match win for the Eagles, 5&4, over Little Rock redshirt junior Marcel Rauch. Georgia Southern fifth-year senior Jake Maples followed in short order with a 4&3 victory over Trojans junior Anton Albers.
Junior Mason Williams clinched the match for the Eagles with a 2&1 victory, after he halved the hole with Little Rock sophomore Nico Horder on No. 17.
The Eagles were the top-seeded team coming out of stroke play—with a 54-hole score of 35-over par 899 as a team—and won two matches Wednesday to earn the championship.
“Credit to Mystic Creek, it’s an unbelievable test, one of the hardest courses I’ve ever been on in my life,” said Georgia Southern head coach Carter Collins. “For the guys to get through three days and be the stroke play champions and to solidify that with two match play wins against two very good teams, I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
In Wednesday morning’s semifinal matches, No. 2-seeded Little Rock took down No. 3 seed ULM, 3-1-1, behind victories by junior Anton Albers (3&2), fifth-year senior Logan Pate (2&1) and sophomore Nico Horder (3&2). Top-seeded Georgia Southern advanced by besting No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina, 4-0-1, with wins from fifth-year senior Brett Barron (5&4), freshman Luke Dasher (2&1), fifth-year senior Jake Maples (6&5) and junior Ben Carr (1&2).
