New Orleans – Final weekly honors for Sun Belt 2021 Outdoor Track and Field (OTF) season were announced on Thursday with South Alabama winning the men’s and women’s field honors while A-State and Louisiana earned the men’s and women’s track athletes of the week.
The Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held next week, May 13-15, in Mobile, Alabama. The Texas State men's team and Arkansas State women's squad look to defend their 2019 Championship titles.
Men's Track Athlete of the Week: Seth Waters, Arkansas State
Waters recorded a Sun Belt-best 3:44.32 in the 1500m at the Maroon and White Invite on Saturday. The junior’s time places him in the lead in the conference this year and earned him a second place finish at the event. The Maroon and White Invite was hosted by Mississippi State and included Arkansas State, Harding, Hinds CC, ULM, Little Rock, Meridian CC, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Troy, and UAB. The Harrison, Arkansas native, competes in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m in OTF.
Waters' performance marked the second time the once-53-year-old A-State record has been broken this season after teammate Bennett Pascoe broke the record on April 17 with a then-best time of 3:45.27.
Waters leads the Sun Belt conference in the 1500m and is second in the 800m.
Men's Field Athlete of the Week: Francois Prinsloo, South Alabama
Prinsloo earned his sixth victory in the discus throw this season after throwing a career-best distance of 60.17m at the Southeastern Conference Tune-Up on Saturday. His mark is the second-best throw in school history The redshirt freshman currently ranks No. 8 in the nation in the discus throw. The Worcester, South Africa native also recorded a hammer throw PR of 57.32m to place second at the same meet. This is Prinsloo’s second Sun Belt Weekly Honor this season.
Women's Track Athlete of the Week: Kiana Foster, Louisiana
Foster earned a pair of first-place finishes, posting marks of 11.23 seconds in the 100 meter dash and 23.73 seconds in the 200m while competing at the Southeastern-Conference Tune-Up hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. Teams competing at the Tune-Up included SLU, South Alabama, Central Arkansas, Nicholls and Louisiana.
The freshman’s personal best in the 100m was the second-fastest time in school history and .06 behind the school-record held by two-time All-American and 1992 Olympian Twilet Malcolm. Foster, a native of Amite, La., is No. 14 nationally in the 100m and No. 9 on the NCAA East Regional Preliminary list. She is ranked No. 42 on the NCAA East Preliminary list in the 200m.
Women's Field Athlete of the Week: Autavia Fluker, South Alabama
Fluker broke her Sun Belt hammer throw record for the third time this season with a 67.33m mark at the Southeastern-Conference Tune-Up. The senior’s performance was more than 11 meters further than the first runner-up on Saturday. The Bessemer, Alabama native currently ranks No. 8 in the nation in the hammer throw. Fluker also finished second in shot put with a 14.88m performance at the same event.
This is Fluker’s third Sun Belt Weekly Honor this season.
