Six Sun Belt Student-Athletes Earn ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Nods

NEW ORLEANS — Six Sun Belt student-athletes were named to the 2021 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Region Teams, the organization announced Wednesday. The teams are voted on by members of the ABCA—led by the ABCA NCAA Division I All-America Committee.

Georgia Southern was the lone Sun Belt program with multiple honorees—graduate student outfielder Mason McWhorter and senior relief pitcher Nick Jones—who were each listed on the Southeast All-Region First Team.

McWhorter was the 2021 Sun Belt Player of the Year, after hitting .372 with 18 home runs, 52 RBIs and 50 runs scored. Left-handed pitcher Jones tied the Eagles program record with 17 saves on the season, while compiling a 1.48 ERA and striking out 67 over 42.2 innings pitched.

Troy sophomore outfielder Logan Cerny joined the duo on the Southeast All-Region First Team, while South Alabama senior pitcher Miles Smith was a Second Team honoree.

Cerny hit .332 with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs and 49 runs scored. Right-handed pitcher Smith—the Most Outstanding Player at the Sun Belt Baseball Championship—accumulated a 6-1 record with 71 strikeouts and a 1.88 ERA over 76.2 innings pitched.

Louisiana junior designated hitter Ben Fitzgerald (South All-Region Second Team) and UTA junior starting pitcher Carlos Tavera (Central All-Region Second Team) were also Second Team selections in their respective regions.

Fitzgerald hit .293 with 28 extra-base hits, 31 RBIs and 32 runs scored. Right-handed pitcher Tavera struck out 117 batters over 83.0 innings pitched, while amassing a 3.04 ERA.
