NEW ORLEANS — Four Sun Belt student-athletes received All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Georgia Southern graduate student outfielder Mason McWhorter was named a 2021 First Team All-American, while Eagle senior relief pitcher Nick Jones was dubbed a Second Team All-American.
McWhorter—the Sun Belt Player of the Year and an All-Sun Belt First Team honoree—hit .372 with 16 doubles, a triple and 18 home runs on the season. The Cumming, Ga., native accumulated 52 RBIs and 50 runs scored in 57 games played.
Jones, an All-Sun Belt First Team selection, tied the Eagles program record with 17 saves on the season. The left-handed pitcher out of Johns Creek, Ga., compiled a 1.48 ERA and struck out 67 batters over 42.2 innings pitched.
Troy freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Gainous and South Alabama freshman right-handed pitcher Jeremy Lee were recognized as Freshmen All-Americans.
Gainous—the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year—struck out 83 batters over 83.0 innings pitched for the Trojans. The Cairo, Ga., product compiled a 9-5 record with a 4.66 ERA, while holding opposing batters to a .248 batting average.
Lee, an All-Sun Belt Second Team honoree, fanned 68 batters over 52.0 innings pitched for the Jaguars. The Valley Grand, Ala., native posted a 3-2 record and a 3.46 ERA, while holding opponents to a .224 batting average.
