Regular Season Championship, Top Seeds Hang in Balance Entering Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Season Finales

NEW ORLEANS – The 2025 Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer conference schedule concludes Wednesday, October 29 with a full slate of matches and both divisional titles up for grabs.

The slate features two East Division, two West Division and three cross-divisional matchups, as six matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

FOLEY-BOUND
The eight-team field for the 2025 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Championship is set, as Georgia State, James Madison, Louisiana, ULM, Marshall, Old Dominion, South Alabama and Texas State have clinched berths. Seeding remains undetermined for all eight teams entering Wednesday’s season finales. The tournament will be held Nov. 3-8 in in Foley, Ala., at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex. Quarterfinal matches kick off Monday, November 3, followed by semifinals on Wednesday, November 5 and the championship match on Saturday, November 8.

CARE TO SHARE?
Five teams – Texas State (19 points), ULM (19 points), Old Dominion (18 points), South Alabama (18 points) and Georgia State (16 points) – remain in contention for the regular season championship which is awarded to the team earning the highest number of points in the conference standings. Texas State can earn at least a share of the title with a home win over James Madison and ULM can accomplish the same with a road victory at Louisiana.

EAST IMPLICATIONS
One of the most consequential matches on the Sun Belt docket features an East Division showdown in Norfolk, Va., when Old Dominion (9-2-4, 5-1-3 SBC) hosts Georgia State (9-6-2, 5-3-1 SBC). The Monarchs (9 division points) must win to clinch the division and one of the top two seeds in the Sun Belt Championship. However, a draw or victory by the Panthers (7 division points) would result in James Madison (11 division points) securing the division and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The last time they met, Old Dominion and Georgia State played to a 1-1 draw in the 2024 Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals in Foley, before the Monarchs advanced, 3-1, in penalty kicks.

WEST’S BEST
South Alabama (11 division points) can win the West Division outright and secure the top overall seed in the 2025 Sun Belt Championship with a road victory at Troy in addition to a ULM loss or draw against Louisiana. ULM (11 division points) can accomplish the same with a victory and a South Alabama loss or draw. Texas State’s direct path to clinching the division requires losses by both South Alabama and ULM, while tiebreaking scenarios also hold keys to that possibility.

CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH
James Madison (8-4-5, 4-2-3 SBC) travels to Texas State (8-2-6, 5-0-4 SBC) in a rematch of the 2024 Sun Belt Championship title match. The Dukes won last year’s final in dramatic fashion, 3-2, on a goal by Shea Collins in the 89th minute after the Bobcats erased a 2-0 first-half deficit with a pair of goals in the 22nd and 55th minutes. Texas State owns the longest active unbeaten streak at home against Sun Belt opponents at 15-consecutive matches, as the Bobcats own a 10-0-5 record against league opponents in San Marcos going back to late in the 2022 season.

SUN BELT IN THE RPI
As of Monday, October 27, the Sun Belt Conference has six programs ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA Women’s Soccer RPI rankings which is the fifth most among Division I Conferences behind only the ACC, Big 12, SEC and Big Ten. South Alabama leads the Sun Belt at No. 49, followed by No. 57 James Madison, No. 61 Old Dominion, No. 74 James Madison, No. 89 Marshall and No. 90 ULM.

UNBEATEN STREAKS
ULM increased its league-leading undefeated streak to 12 with a 2-2 draw at Georgia Southern on Oct. 24. Texas State (5-0-4) owns the second-longest active unbeaten streak at nine-consecutive matches. Coastal Carolina (0-0-7) is next with a conference record seven-consecutive draws, followed by South Alabama (2-0-3) going undefeated in its last five outings. Combining non-conference play and having already completed its 2025 home slate, ULM is the only Sun Belt team to go unbeaten on its home pitch this season with a 7-0-2 mark.

DRAWS HISTORY
Through 63 total Sun Belt matches played this season and with 7 remaining, 23 league contests have ended in draws which is the most in a season in conference history, eclipsing the previous standard of 22 set in 2024. Coastal Carolina eclipsed the Sun Belt record for draws in conference play with eight in nine matches this season, including seven in a row. In 2022, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel eliminated overtime for regular season matches tied after 90 minutes.

HAT TRICKS
Four Sun Belt women’s soccer players have scored at least three goals in a single match this season which includes the last two instances occurring in conference play:

Hina Suzuki, Georgia State – 3 goals vs. Truett McConnell (Aug. 14)
Kennedy Horn, Arkansas State – 4 goals vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Sept. 7)
Ginny Lackey, James Madison – 3 goals vs. Louisiana (Oct. 10)
Miku Kurihara, Louisiana – 3 goals at Troy (Oct. 24)
