Louisiana Comeback Bid Falls Just Short in 68 Ventures Bowl

NEW ORLEANS – One of seven teams in the nation to play in a bowl game in each of the last eight seasons, Louisiana fell to Delaware, 20-13, in the 68 Ventures Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

The Ragin’ Cajuns—who were part of the Sun Belt’s 10-team bowl contingent that leads all non-autonomy conferences for the fourth-straight season—dropped to 7-6 in 13 all-time bowl appearances.

Redshirt senior defensive lineman Jordan Lawson blocked a 52-yard Delaware field goal attempt, which redshirt junior linebacker Jake St. Andre recovered to spark a Louisiana fourth-quarter comeback bid. On the ensuing drive, redshirt sophomore quarterback Lunch Winfield led Louisiana on a 10-play, 46-yard scoring march, capped by an eight-yard touchdown connection with redshirt sophomore wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. The first Ragin’ Cajuns touchdown of the contest pulled Louisiana within a possession, 20-13.

Two possessions later, a hobbling Winfield led the Ragin’ Cajuns on a 12-play, 86-yard drive, setting up the final play of the game from the Delaware seven-yard line. Winfield’s would-be game-tying pass caromed off the hands of redshirt sophomore tight end Caden Jensen in the end zone as time expired.

Three Louisiana turnovers proved costly, particularly an interception in the end zone that halted a first-quarter drive that had reached the Delaware five-yard line and led directly to a Fightin’ Blue Hens touchdown that proved to be the difference.

Winfield threw for 231 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a team-high 40 yards on 14 attempts. Jensen led all Louisiana receivers with four catches for 72 yards. Lawson—with five tackles and three tackles for loss—and senior linebacker Jaden Dugger—with seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack—headlined the defensive unit.

With the loss, Louisiana concludes the season 6-7.
