TUCSON, Ariz. Sun Belt Conference school alums had quite the weekend at the PGA TOURs Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
Former South Alabama All-American Heath Slocum recorded his first TOUR victory, firing a final-round 7-under 65 on Sunday. With the win, Slocum earns a two-year exemption on the TOUR.
Paired with Slocum in the final round was former Louisiana-Lafayette All-American Mike Heinen, who finished in a tie for eighth after a final-round 70.
The Rayne, La., native fired a third-round 65 and earned $84,000 for his efforts.
Slocum, meanwhile, opened his final round with four consecutive birdies to eventually make the turn at 5-under-par (31). He parred the 18th hole, the most difficult on TOUR, to beat Aaron Baddeley by one shot.
Slocum, 30, bogeyed just two holes throughout the 72-hole tournament, tying the lowest round in tournament history with David Frost (1988).
With the win, the Gulf Breeze, Fla., native earned $540,000 to increase his winnings for the year to $649,604.
Slocum, who was the first Jaguar to earn all-American honors, led the Jaguars to consecutive Sun Belt Conference titles in 1994-95. During his collegiate career, Slocum won seven individual titles, which current Jag Gareth Maybin tied last month.
