Appalachian State clips Virginia Tech 65-63
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) The Virginia Tech Hokies were ambushed by the Appalachian State Mountaineers and went on to lose 65-63 on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies are now 2-1 on the young season.
Frank Eaves, who notched a game-winning layup, led the Mountaineers with 19 points.
Adam Smith (11 points), Justin Bibbs and Devin Wilson (10 apiece) led the Hokies attack.
Appalachian State lead by as many as six points early in the second half before Virginia Tech clawed its way back in front. Back came the Mountaineers, forging ahead 59-56 with 5:43 to play. A Joey van Zegeren dunk put tech up again 60-59 with four minutes left.
Virginia Tech tied the game at 63 with ten seconds left on a van Zegeren free throw. Eaves then drove the length of the court for the Mountaineers to score the winning basket. A last-second heave by Tech was off the mark.
A final 42-27 rebounding edge for Appalachian State helped do in the Hokies, allowing the visitors to overcome 18 turnovers. They had 23 second half points vs. just 5 for Tech. The Hokies has 14 miscues. Tech shot 44.6% for the game vs. 41.4% for the Mountaineers.
It was a battle from the outset: the Mountaineers (1-2) raced out to an 18-7 lead with 11:52 left in the first half on 8-of-13 shooting. The Hokies didn't lead in the game until a Devin Wilson bucket with 1:30 to play before the break. That lasted for a minute and Tech trailed 29-28 at the half. Despite committing 12 turnovers, a 23-14 rebounding edge for Appalachian State and 20 points in the paint (14 for Virginia Tech) kept the visitors in the game.

Appalachian State: The Mountaineers broke a two-game losing streak, and a larger string of 10 straight losses against nonconference Division I foes.
Virginia Tech: The Hokies are 8-1 all-time versus Appalachian State, a first year member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Hokies had won the last seven in the series. Every game has been played in Blacksburg. Mountaineers first year head Jim Fox tutored NBA star Stephen Curry as an assistant coach at Davidson.

The Hokies escape the cold weather for a few days, heading to Cancun, Mexico for the Cancun Challenge. The first of two games is against Northern Iowa on November 25. They'll play in a championship or consolation game the next day.

UALR beats UMKC 73-68
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) James White scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four blocks to lead the University of Arkansas-Little Rock to a 73-68 win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City at the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Saturday.
Josh Hagins added 11 points for the Trojans (2-1). James Reid chipped in with nine points and four rebounds. The team hit 51 percent from the field overall, 73 percent from the line and 40 percent from beyond the arc.
UMKC led 34-30 at the break but lost the momentum to the Trojans in the second period. They finished shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 45 percent from the line.
Scoring leaders for the Kangaroos (2-2) were Martez Harrison and Frank Williams, Jr. with 15 points apiece. Shayok Shayok led the team with 11 rebounds.

Georgia Southern routs Div. II Johnson (FL) 97-41
STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) Jelani Hewitt scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as Georgia Southern routed NCCAA Division-II Johnson University (Florida) 97-41 on Saturday night.
The game was tied at eight in the first half when the Eagles sparked a 26-3 run with five 3-pointers, and led 58-19 at the break. Georgia Southern (2-1) finished with 15 3-pointers - 10 in the first half - on 43 attempts.
Hewitt was 5 of 10 from behind the arc. Angel Matias and Mike Hughes each scored 12 points, and Trent Wiedeman, Coye Simmons and Curtis Diamond all chipped in 10. Matias grabbed 16 boards as the Eagles out-rebounded the Suns 62-30.
Kaleb Baker led Johnson University with 10 points, and Chris Hilaire added four assists.
Georgia Southern outscored the Suns in the paint 52-22, and had 35 second-chance points.

Texas-Arlington beats Houston Baptist 87-69
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Jamel Outler tied a career high with 26 points and Texas-Arlington made 13 of 21 from 3-point range on Saturday night to beat Houston Baptist 87-69.
With only eight 3-point attempts, Outler set a personal single-game mark with seven 3-pointers and moved to eighth on the program's career list with 134.
Arlington (3-1) made 12 of its first 15 shots to open the game with a 33-10 lead. Outler was 4 of 4 from long range during that stretch and the Mavericks were 5 of 7.
Drew Charles and Lonnie McClanahan had 12 points each, and Kaelon Wilson added 10.
Houston Baptist (1-2) trailed 44-26 at the break and never cut the deficit closer than 16 points in the second half.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Jeromie Hill had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Texas-San Antonio to an 80-67 win over Texas State on Saturday.
Ryan Bowie finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Keon Lewis and Christian Wilson each added 15 points for Texas-San Antonio (2-1). The rebound battle tipped in favor of the roadrunners 39-28.
D.J. Brown tallied 16 points, including four 3-pointers and Emani Grant had 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals for Texas State (2-1).
Fueled by six early points by Grant, Texas State jumped out to an early 25-11 lead. Then Grant hit a pair of free throws and a layup to close out the half up 40-33.

Detroit beats South Alabama 66-53
DETROIT (AP) Juwan Howard Jr. scored 22 points and Detroit held off a late second-half rally to beat South Alabama 66-53 on Saturday.
South Alabama went on a 13-4 run after trailing by 16 to close within seven, 60-53, with 1:18 left to play. Detroit (2-2) finished 4 for 4 from the free throw line and Howard dunked to end the game.
Howard was just 4-of-15 shooting from the floor, but went a perfect 14 of 14 at the foul line. Anton Wilson chipped in 11 points as the only other Titan to score in double figures.
The Jaguars dominated on the boards, pulling in 48 to Detroit's 37, but struggled at the line and finished with 52.2-percent shooting (12 of 23) on free throws.
Taishaun Johnson scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds to lead South Alabama. The Jaguars (1-2) had 22 turnovers.
