NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Double-digit kill performances by sophomores Hope Pawlik and Taylor Zaeske were not enough as the ULM Volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 15-25, 6-15) heartbreaker to Stephen F. Austin Wednesday night at the Shelton Gym in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Zaeske had a career night as she picked up her first double-double kill match in a Warhawk uniform and set new highs with 12 kills and 11 digs to lead leader all scorers. Pawlik continued her stellar play after posting 10 kills for the fourth time in her past five matches and sixth overall.
Sophomore Hadley Swartz fell just shy of a double-double after collecting nine kills and 12 digs from the outside hitter position. Freshman Bayleigh Hoffman set up ULM 34 times and added seven digs for another solid all-around performance.
The Warhawks (2-6) jumped out of the gate firing on all cylinders by capturing the first two sets. However, SFA (3-5) was able to squeak by ULM in its own gym for the first time since 2010 after picking up the final three sets of the match. The team falls to 2-6 on the young season entering its final tournament this weekend.
With the score tied at 9-9 in the first stanza, the Warhawks would make their move and pull away by scoring five of the next six points before closing out set one, 25-22, with a powerful kill from Zaeske.
Tied 23-23 late in the second set, ULM took advantage of a Ladyjack error and a big-time kill from Pawlik to go up two sets to none heading into the intermission.
Team-captain Marcela Araya tallied a match-high 25 digs for her third 20-plus dig effort of the year. Sophomore Kaitlyn Shearer and freshman Mary Anselmo chipped in with eight kills and eight digs, respectively.
ULM is back in action this weekend when the team travels three hours down the state of Louisiana to play four matches at the McNeese Tournament. First serve is set for Friday at 10 a.m. versus Prairie View A&M.
