ULM Cruises Past Grambling State, 3-1

MONROE, La. – For the fourth time in five matches, the ULM Volleyball team (6-7) was victorious after the Warhawks eased past Grambling State, 3-1 (25-11, 19-25, 25-18, 25-13), Monday night in their home debut from the Fant Ewing Coliseum.

“It’s always good to get a win,” ULM head coach Patrick Hiltz said. “We were able to work on some things during set one. We looked crisp, we looked good but got away from that in set two and Grambling took advantage. However, we were able to regroup in sets three and four to earn the victory.”

Sophomore Hadley Swartz was overpowering during the performance, finishing with 16 kills to lead all scorers. The York, Pa. native also added eight digs, two blocks and two aces.

Freshmen Kalena Caruthers, Jennifer McClendon and Mary Anselmo didn’t look like first year players during the effort. Caruthers recorded 10 kills on .350 hitting to eclipse double-digit kills for the second time in her career. McClendon tallied seven kills on 13 swings for a match-high .462 attack percentage. Anselmo was just shy of her first career double-double after posting 12 assists and nine digs.

ULM got off to a quick start in the first set behind seven kills on eight attacks from Swartz alone. Credit was due to a highly efficient .333 attack percentage to give the Warhawks their biggest margin of victory in a set all season, 14 points.

After the Tigers (1-6) tied the match, ULM came out of the intermission ready to attack. The Warhawks dominated the third set, 25-18, before cruising to a 25-13 fourth set triumph to clinch their sixth win.

Senior Marcela Ayaya played another all-around solid match. The Costa Rica native collected 20 digs, six assists and three service aces.

The Warhawks wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-7 record. ULM will now travel to Arkansas on Wednesday (7 p.m.) to open Sun Belt play against UALR (6-4).
