Over 1,700 Student-Athletes Honored by Sun Belt Conference for Academic Achievements

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference announced 1,740 student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner’s List. The Sun Belt honored student-athletes who achieved a GPA over 3.0 for the previous school year. The 2013-14 academic year marked the fourth consecutive year that more than 1,700 athletes have been honored by the Sun Belt.

The Commissioner’s List is comprised of student-athletes who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the previous academic year, while the Academic Honor Roll is awarded to those maintaining a 3.0-3.49 GPA.

“It is a true testament to our institution’s coaches and administrators who place an emphasis on academics and classroom work off of the fields and courts,” Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson said. “Our student-athletes understand the importance of being a student first and an athlete second.”

This year’s list honored 811 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s List and 929 student-athletes on the Honor Roll. The 811 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s List was just short of last year’s total of 813 and was the third highest total in Sun Belt history.

Appalachian State led the way with 101 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List and 109 tabbed to the Academic Honor Roll. Arkansas State was second as 178 student-athletes were honored, including 82 Commissioner’s List honorees. South Alabama and

Troy each had 85 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s List. UL Lafayette placed 102 honorees on the Academic Honor Roll just behind Appalachian State’s total.

Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country had 118 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List and 114 named to the Academic Honor to top all women’s sports. Football led all men’s sports with 102 honorees on the Commissioner’s List and 189 on the

Academic Honor Roll. Women’s Soccer placed 110 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s List.

The total of 1,740 student-athletes honored was the second highest total in Sun Belt history, falling behind the 2011-2012 total of 1,793.
