Mavericks, Panthers Fall on Wednesday Night

Wednesday, March 18

No. 18 Dallas Baptist too Much for Mavs
ARLINGTON, Texas - Coming off of a thrilling walk-off victory over Texas at Globe Life Park on Tuesday night, UT Arlington struggled to get things going against Dallas Baptist on Wednesday as the Mavericks fell to the Patriots 9-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark.

"That's one of the best clubs we've played all year and having to play them back-to-back didn't help pitching depth-wise," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "Again no excuse. We didn't play real well and give them credit. They're really good and we just have to do a better job of playing on back-to-back nights."

UTA (10-8, 4-2 SBC) hit .220 in the box while DBU (15-2, 0-0 MVC) hit an impressive .342. The Patriots also notched five extra base hits compared to two for the Mavs.

Will Olson and RJ Williams paced the Mavericks offensively as the freshman duo went a combined 4-of-6 in the box. Olson brought in one run and scored one while Williams also came across the plate once.

Jackson Morris also got in on the action as he reached base three times in the game. The DH for UTA went 1-for-2 at the plate and was walked twice while also scoring one run.

The Mavericks three runs came from eight hits, while the Patriots nine runs were due to eight hits. Each team committed three errors.

UT Arlington ran through seven pitchers on the night including starter Justin Schnedler who allowed one hit and two earned runs in his three innings on the mound. The RHP struck out three batters in his first start of the season.

"The more we mature the better we'll get at playing back-to-back and we're going to play good people," Thomas added. "We've got a Tuesday and Wednesday game next week after traveling back from California so we'll see what we're made of."

The Mavericks return to the field this weekend with a three-game road trip in California. The Mavericks will play a pair of games against UC Santa Barbara on Friday and Saturday with the final game of the trip coming on Sunday against Dartmouth.

Georgia State Falls to Savannah State, 7-3
Savannah, Ga. -- Georgia State fell 7-3 at Savannah State Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field. Joey Roach had three hits for the Panthers, who had won eight straight against Savannah State.

Georgia State dropped to 13-7 on the season, but the Panthers have won nine of their last 12 games. The Tigers (10-11) defeated GSU for the first time since 2004 and just the second time in 13 meetings.

Savannah State starter Zach McCormack (1-0) allowed three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings, and then three Savannah State relievers shut out the Panthers over the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit.

With the Panthers trailing 4-2 with one out in the sixth, Roach tripled over the center fielder's head and then came home on a balk to cut the deficit to one. But Savannah State answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on from there.

"Today was a tough day," said GSU head coach Greg Frady, whose Panthers won an 11-inning game on Tuesday night. "Anytime you play a road game right after you play a hard-fought, extra-inning game, you run the risk of not having good energy and focus. Our concentration and focus was not good today, and we looked like a different team than we normally are.

"I want to congratulate Savannah State. They won all the deciding moments in the game - the big hits, the two-out RBIs, all the little things inside the game. But we will regroup and get ready for this weekend."

Georgia State returns home to host UL Lafayette in a Sun Belt Conference series that opens Friday at 6 p.m. Tickets are available in advance by calling 404-413-4020 or by visiting GeorgiaStateSports.com.
