ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington swept Little Rock, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-14), in Friday's final match of the 2016 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship at College Park Center in Arlington.
The fourth-seeded Mavericks (17-15) took double-digit leads in the first and third sets and never looked back winning those sets handedly, 25-19 and 25-14, respectively. Little Rock (12-18) posed a threat in set two as the Trojans jumped out to a 12-4 lead early on before the Mavericks battled back to tie the set at 20-apiece before winning 25-21.
UTA's Qiana Cañete tallied 17 kills and a .302 attack percentage to lead either squad. Kaitlyn Granger added eight kills and Zhanelle Geathers added six kills and a .455 attack percentage. Taylor Murata totaled 21 digs for the Mavericks. Cassidy Wheeler setup the Mavericks with 38 assists on the night.
UTA's fourth consecutive win puts the tournament hosts in Saturday's semifinals against top-seeded Arkansas State at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
Veronica Marin led Little Rock with nine kills, a .348 hitting percentage and four total blocks. Taylor Lindberg tallied 30 assists while Kelsey Leech scooped up 20 digs. Marina Avram put down eight kills with 10 digs and Edina Selimovic had six kills and three blocks.
