ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 2 Coastal Carolina cruised to a 3-0 sweep of No. 7 Georgia Southern in the first round of the 2016 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship Friday at College Park Center.
Five consecutive Georgia Southern (15-18) errors fueled a 9-0 run that ultimately captured a 25-12 opening set win for the Chanticleers (25-4). The second frame was tighter as the Eagles crept three points behind midway, but offensive trouble routed its effort. Coastal Carolina would go on to win 25-18 and won the third set 25-14 to claim its first win in Sun Belt postseason play.
The sweep was also Coastal's tenth consecutive as they advance to Saturday's semifinals against No. 3 Texas State.
The Chanticleers out-hit the Eagles 44-22 and out-dug their opponent 48-41. Both teams registered five blocks. Junior Leah Hardeman notched a double-double for the Chanticleers with 13 points and 10 digs. Georgia Southern's Alex Beecher recorded 16 digs.
The Chanticleers and Bobcats will square off on Saturday at 4 p.m. (CT) from College Park Center in the first of two semifinals.
