Sun Belt teams combine for 7-1 record on Saturday

Louisiana beats Louisiana Tech 91-83

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) Bryce Washington scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Louisiana won its eighth straight, beating Louisiana Tech 91-83 on Saturday night.

It was the eighth double-double this season for Washington who was 9 of 12 from the field for the Ragin Cajuns (8-2). Frank Bartley IV added 18 points, Justin Miller and Jay Wright had 14 points apiece and P.J. Hardy chipped in 11.

Louisiana took early command and held on for a 43-31 advantage at the break.

Louisiana Tech cut the lead to six, 64-58, with 8:02 to go in the second half but the Ragin Cajuns immediately pulled away again on a Washington layup followed by a Wright jumper and two quick 3-pointers by Hardy to a 74-58 lead with 5:52 left.

Erik McCree scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (5-4). Jacobi Boykins added 21 points, all from 3-point range.

Johnson Jr. hits 9 3-pointers as UALR beats Central Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Marcus Johnson Jr. made a career-high nine 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead Arkansas-Little Rock over Central Arkansas 70-59 on Saturday.

Johnson was 9 of 11 from 3-point range. Kemy Osse scored 12 points and Lis Shoshi added 10 points and 14 rebounds for UALR (8-2), which has won five straight since its one-point loss against Pepperdine on Nov. 22.

The Trojans made 56 percent of its 3-pointers (15 of 27).

Jordan Howard made four 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Central Arkansas (1-7). Derreck Brooks had 14 points and Mathieu Kamba finished with 11.

Brooks made a jump shot to give the Bears their last lead, 47-46, with about 13 minutes left. The Trojans used an 18-10 spurt and lead 64-57 with 3:21 to go. Johnson made two 3-pointers during the stretch and the Bears didnt get closer.

Georgia State wins, gives Hunter coaching milestone

ATLANTA (AP) Willie Clayton scored 11 points and had 15 rebounds and Georgia State beat Division-II Georgia Southwestern 83-52 on Saturday to give Ron Hunter a coaching milestone.

Hunter won his 108th game at Georgia State, the most in school history, in his sixth season and became the seventh Division-I coach to become the all-time wins leader at multiple schools. Hunter spent 17 years at IUPUI where he won 274 games.

Clayton put together his 19th career double-double. Devin Mitchell, with four 3-pointers, added 13 points and Malik Benlevi 12 for the Panthers (5-3), winners of four of their last five.

Georgia State led 39-22 at halftime then began the second half on a 25-9 run. The Panthers shot 50 percent, were 11 of 24 from the arc, had a 43-22 rebounding advantage and turned 18 turnovers, including 10 steals, into 24 points.

Brandon Price and Tyrone Wooten scored 14 points each for the Hurricanes (1-5).

Varnado has career-high 27, Troy dominates Alabama A&M 88-59

TROY, Ala. (AP) Jordon Varnado hit 10 of 12 field goals to total a career-high 27 points to lead Troy to a dominating 88-59 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday.

Varnado also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Jeremy Hollimon was 6 of 10 from the floor, making 3 of 4 from distance, for 18 points and Juan Davis Jr. added 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Trojans (5-4).

Troy jumped out to a 39-17 advantage to start the game and held a 48-24 halftime lead. The Trojans, who nailed 8 of 15 from beyond the arc in the first half, made 13 of 30 (43.3 percent) for the game. They shot 33 of 69 from the floor while limiting the Bulldogs to 18-of-56 shooting.

Alabama A&M is still looking for its first win of the season, falling to 0-7. Tracy Burnett led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

Texas State extends Prairie View skid to 5 games, 64-57

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) Nedeljko Prijovics layup with just under eight minutes left gave Texas State the lead and the Bobcats held on for a 64-57 win over Prairie View A&M Saturday.

Ojai Black hit a 3-pointer and Prijovic hit a jumper to give Texas State breathing room and the Bobcats closed the game out from the free throw line.

Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and Nijhal Pearson each scored 14 points to lead Texas State (5-4), which extended its home record to 3-1 with the victory. Prijovic added 10 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench.

Daquan Cook scored 20 points to lead Prairie View (2-8), which now is 1-7 in road games to start the season and have lost five straight - to Houston, Kansas State, and No. 16 Wisconsin on the road and to Lamar at home.

Troy Thompson hit 5 of 10 from the field for 12 points off the bench.

Wilson has 22 points, Coastal Carolina holds off NCCU 70-67

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) Elijah Wilson drilled 4 of 6 from long range, hitting 8 of 12 from the floor, for 22 points as Coastal Carolina held off a late North Carolina Central charge for a 70-67 win on Saturday night.

Trailing 66-56, North Carolina Centrals Dajuan Graff nailed a 3 and Patrick Cole made four free throws to close to 66-63 with 34 seconds left. The Chanticleers made four free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the win.

Jaylen Shaw had 15 points while dishing out five assists and Josh Coleman made all six field goal attempts for 12 points for Coastal Carolina (5-6).

The Chanticleers were 27 of 61 (44.3 percent) from the floor while holding NCCU to 21-of-62 (33.9 percent) shooting. Coastal won the rebound battle 46-31.

Patrick Cole led NCCU (6-4) with 28 points, hitting 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, and Rashaun Madison added 18 points.

ULM beats Jacksonville St. 88-83 in OT

MONROE, La. (AP) Nick Coppola scored 23 points as ULM beat Jacksonville St. 88-83 in overtime on Saturday night.

The Warhawks (3-5) led throughout the overtime period and Coppola took it to 84-78 on a pair of free throws with 49 seconds to play. Jacksonville State cut the lead to three, 84-81, with 39 seconds remaining but Sam McDaniel and Marcus Washington combined for four at the line in the final seconds keep the Warhawks on top.

Travis Munnings scored 19 points, McDaniel added 17 points with 12 rebounds and Washington had 13 points.

Coppola and Marvin Jean-Pierre sank back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the Warhawks four-point lead at the break to 68-58 with 4:36 left in regulation. The Gamecocks (5-5) battled back to tie it 72-72 on a Malcolm Drumwright layup with 54 seconds to go and it held, sending the game into overtime.

Norbertas Giga and Tyrik Edwards had 18 points apiece for the Gamecocks.

Myles, Newton lead Stetson to 87-78 win over S. Alabama

DELAND, Fla. (AP) Divine Myles scored 23 points, and Derick Newton added 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Stetson scored the last 10 points to beat South Alabama 87-78 on Saturday night.

Myles was 6 of 7 from the floor and made 10 of 12 free-throw attempts. Luke Doyle drilled 4 of 9 3-point attempts and finished with 14 points for Stetson (6-6). B.J. Glasford added 10 points and Angel Rivera dished out 10 assists.

Stetson took a 43-39 lead into halftime. The Jaguars opened the second half with a 10-0 run, led 51-48 with 15:45 remaining, and were up 74-71 with 5:38 to play. Myles made a layup and Newton drilled a 3 to give the Hatters an 82-78 lead with 2:05 left and Stetson held on for the win.
