Georgia State wins at Middle Tennessee, App State defeats Hampton

Georgia State edges Middle Tennessee 64-56

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) Jeremy Hollowell scored 20 points as Georgia State edged Middle Tennessee 64-56 on Wednesday night.

Hollowell was 6 of 17 from the field including four from distance for the Panthers (7-4). Jeff Thomas added 15 points on five 3-pointers and Malik Benlevi had eight points and led the team with 10 rebounds.

Hollowell drained three 3-pointers to give the Panthers a 15-3 start and Thomas sank three more in the final 6:40 to help them to a 33-25 lead at the break.

Georgia State led throughout the second half. Middle Tennessee got as close as seven, 50-43, on a JaCorey Williams jumper with 6:52 to play but a Jordan Session dunk and Thomas' final 3-pointer with 3:36 left helped keep the Panthers on top.

Giddy Potts scored 19 points with six boards and six steals for the Blue Raiders (10-3).

Logan hits 5 3s, scores 21 in Appalachian State's win

BOONE, N.C. (AP) Emarius Logan hit five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points and Appalachian State defeated Hampton 88-67 on Wednesday night.

Ronshad Shabazz scored 15 points and Patrick Good, Tyrell Johnson and Griffin Kinney added 12 points each with Kinney grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds. It was the seventh time this season the Mountaineers (5-6), who have won three of their last four games, have had at least four double-digit scorers.

Lawrence Cooks scored 21 points, Jermaine Marrow 14 and Kalin Fisher 12 for the Pirates (2-9), who have lost three straight.

Shabazz, Kinney and Robinson each sank 3-pointers for the Mountaineers to start the game and took off to a 16-0 lead less than four minutes in. The Pirates cut the lead to nine once in the second half but a 14-3 run boosted the lead to 73-53 with five minutes to go.

Florida opens revamped arena in style, 94-71 over UALR

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Florida coach Mike White didn't want his players getting wrapped up in the ''party.''

They obliged, although Devin Robinson and KeVaughn Allen ended up providing more cause for celebration.

Robinson scored 21 points, Allen added 19 and the Gators opened their revamped arena with a resounding, 94-71 victory against Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday night.

The Gators (9-3) hit 21 of their first 28 shots in Exactech Arena, including 8 of 13 from 3-point range, and built a 29-point lead that turned the grand opening into an early exit for Florida's starters and many of the 10,000-plus on hand.

''It was rocking in there,'' White said. ''It was fun. It was loud. And our guys fed off it from the tip. I thought our guys played with tremendous energy and confidence, and without question this new energy level because of the new arena and playing in front of our fans for the first time all season was a big factor.''

Robinson was 7-of-11 shooting, including 4 of 5 from behind the arc. Allen made 7 of 10 shots, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and scored 13 in a row for Florida in the decisive first half.

''That got us going,'' Robinson said.

Canyon Barry chipped in 15 points for Florida, which played its first 11 games away from Gainesville. Kevarrius Hayes had 12 points, and Kasey Hill finished with 11 points and 11 assists.

''It just felt like it was everybody's night,'' Allen said.

The Gators finished with season highs in points (94), assists (20) and 3-pointers (16). They shot 59.6 percent from the field and 51.6 percent from 3-point range. It was a welcome sight for White, who was concerned his guys would get caught up in the pomp and circumstance of the team's remodeled arena, its home opener and playing around the holidays.

''This is when upsets happen in college basketball as often as any other time of year because sometimes teams are half checked out,'' he said. ''We all know that. ... Our focus was on not allowing it to be a party. This isn't a party. Let our fans party. They deserve this. This is incredible. They'll have fun. But if we're not locked in ... then we're selling ourselves short.''

The Gators spent $64.5 million to upgrade the decades-old O'Connell Center after last season, remodeling the entire inside bowl with plush seating and updated amenities. Originally scheduled to be overhauled after the 2014-15 season, it was supposed to be the ''house that Billy Donovan built.'' Instead, it ended up being the ''house that Mike White inherited.''

On Wednesday, it was the ''place where the Gators barely missed.''

Florida was shooting 75 percent until Chris Chiozza was long on a 3-pointer with 2:04 remaining in the first half. Barry followed with an air-ball 3 that brought Florida back to reality.

Still, the huge lead was too much for Little Rock to overcome, especially on the road.

Lis Shoshi led the Trojans (9-4) with 19 points.

BIG PICTURE

Florida has won two in a row since falling out of the AP Top 25 poll, a sign White's team might be ready for another shot at being ranked. But the real test will come during Southeastern Conference play.

EGBUNU OUT

Florida center John Egbunu, who is averaging 9.0 points and 7.7 rebounds, missed his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury. Hayes started in his place again and played well.

FACES IN THE CROWD

Retired coach and current Florida ambassador Steve Spurrier was among the 10,655 in attendance. So was Billy Donovan, the son of former Gators coach Billy Donovan. Florida graduate Thad Bullard, better known in the pro wrestling world as Titus O'Neil, also was on hand. So were two Florida recruits, point guard Michael Okauru and swingman Yves Pons.

Taylor sparks Alabama off bench in win over Arkansas State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) Alabama's Jimmie Taylor came off the bench to score 12 points and Arkansas State went over seven minutes in the second half without a field goal as Alabama downed the Red Wolves 67-52 on Wednesday night.

Braxton Key added 11 points and seven rebounds and Dazon Ingram scored 10 for the Tide (6-5), which had lost three of its last four.

Deven Simms led Arkansas State with 15 points and Devin Carter scored 14. The Red Wolves, with a six-point victory at Georgetown on Nov. 17 on their resume, are 9-3.

The Rocket City Classic, a neutral site game in front of a sellout crowd at Von Braun Center, was only the second meeting between the two, with Alabama winning by 24 in a 1969 game in Tuscaloosa.

The Red Wolves were in control early, with a 7-0 first-half run producing a 16-11 lead. But a flagrant-1 foul called on Arkansas State's C.J. Foster, attempting to block an Ingram layup, switched momentum toward the Tide. A Shannon Hale 3-pointer put Alabama ahead 21-18 at the 5:59 mark and the Tide never relinquished the lead.

Carter sank a layup and converted a free throw for a 3-point play at 11:30 of the second half, moving Arkansas State to within five, 44-39. But a series of turnovers, poor shooting and increased Alabama defensive pressure led to the offensive struggles. By the time Simms ended the streak with a 3-pointer, Alabama was comfortably ahead 57-44.

BIG PICTURE

The Red Wolves entered the game ranked 24th in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage at 40.6 percent, but were 4 of 16 against the Tide.
