San Marcos, Texas – No. 8 seed Arkansas State walked-off a winner, 13-12, in an elimination game against No. 4 seed Troy at the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship.
Arkansas State (28-28) staved off elimination with the win and must face another elimination game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Bobcat Ballpark. The Red Wolves will face the losing team from the 7:30 p.m. CT matchup on Thursday between No. 1 seed UL Lafayette and No. 5 seed Texas State. Troy is eliminated from the tournament.
Arkansas State scored five runs over the last three frames, capped by a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Tanner Ring delivered the game-winning hit for Arkansas State with a RBI single to left that scored junior Joe Schrimpf.
The two teams combined to tie the record for hits in a Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament game with 37.
Arkansas State sophomore Bryan Ayers (3-3) earned the win after he tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief and scattered two earned on four hits with five strikeouts. Troy junior Marc Skinner took the loss after he allowed three earned in two innings with a strikeout.
The 2016 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship continues on Thursday with two games in the winner’s bracket to follow in the night session. All games will take place at Bobcat Ballpark on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
