No. 1 Ragin' Cajuns Rally Past No. 5 Texas State

San Marcos, Texas – The No. 1 seed UL Lafayette rallied with four runs in the final two frames to win 4-2 against No. 5 seed Texas State on Friday in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (39-19) advance to the semifinals of the tournament and will square off with the winner of an elimination game between Texas State (31-27) and No. 8 seed Arkansas State. The elimination game between the Bobcats, hosts of the tournament, and the Red Wolves is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

UL Lafayette senior Stefan Trosclair led the way with a 2-for-4 effort and a RBI while freshman Hunter Kasuls also knocked two hits and added a run scored. Texas State freshman Nick Perez went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Texas State jumped out to a 2-0 lead early. The Bobcats plated a run in the bottom of the third when Perez doubled to left to plate sophomore Derek Scheible. Sophomore Luke Sherley reached base on a hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Perez followed with a single before freshman Jonathan Ortega hit a liner to right that glanced off the glove of the diving Brian Mills. Mills recovered to force out Perez at second but the run scored on the fielder’s choice.

UL Lafayette finally got to Texas State starter Cory Geisler in the top of the eighth inning. Kasuls and senior Brian Mills led off with back-to-back singles before a throwing error by Geisler on a bunt from junior Joe Robbins allowed Kasuls to score from second and Mills to advance to third. Trosclair then reached on a bunt single that plated Mills, who broke from third immediately on the squeeze attempt, and junior Brenn Conrad then bunted home Robbins on a safety squeeze.

Senior Nick Thurman singled with one out in the top of the ninth before Kasuls singled and back-to-back wild pitches brought him around to score the Ragin’ Cajuns’ fourth run.

UL Lafayette freshman starter Nick Lee (7-1) earned the win after he threw seven innings and allowed two earned on five hits with three strikeouts. Geisler fell to 4-3 on the season after he went 7 2/3 and allowed two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
